Weekly Reflection

Feast of St Valentine

St Valentine is a third-century Roman saint whose feast is celebrated on 14 February and is commonly associated with romantic love.

Not much of St Valentine’s life is known, and it is possible the stories involve two different saints by the same name. Many scholars agree that St Valentine was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome.

One common story about St Valentine was that a judge put Valentine and his faith to the test. St Valentine was presented with the judge’s blind daughter and told to restore her sight. If he succeeded, the judge vowed to do anything for Valentine. Placing his hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored the child’s vision. The newly baptised judge then freed all of his Christian inmates!

St Valentine was later arrested again for continuing to try to convert people to Christianity. He was sent to Rome under the emperor Claudius Gothicus (Claudius II). The story tells that St Valentine was imprisoned for marrying Christian couples and aiding Christians being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Both acts were considered serious crimes. Claudius sentenced Valentine to death, commanding him to renounce his faith or be beaten with clubs and beheaded.

St Valentine refused to renounce his faith and Christianity and was executed outside the Flaminian Gate on 14 February, 269 AD. Other depictions of St Valentine’s arrests tell that he secretly married couples so husbands wouldn’t have to go to war.

Another variation of the legend of St Valentine says he refused to sacrifice to pagan gods, was imprisoned and while imprisoned, he healed the jailer’s blind daughter. On the day of his execution, he left the girl a note signed, “Your Valentine”.

Although the origin of the feast is not widely agreed upon, it is widely recognised as a day for love, devotion and romance.

Archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to St Valentine. It is reasonable to believe that Valentine really did exist. In 496 AD Pope Gelasius marked 14 February as a celebration in honour of his martyrdom.

Dearest Heavenly Father,

I want to thank you for the precious gift of love you have given to the world and to me. Thank you for blessing me every day with this love and the power and strength that I get from you every single day. Without your love for me I can’t be, I can’t function, I can’t even breathe-because I need your love to sustain me. It’s like food and medicine for my soul Lord.

Please continue to let me feel your comforting love in my life and Lord I give myself over to you to perfect in me this gift of love that I may be able to express it and share it with others. In Jesus name I pray.

Father I love you so much!

Amen

From the Principal

The growth of the College in recent years has resulted in a larger Year 10 cohort. This means that we can support Year 10 teams in the Premier League sports competition for the first time. Students will represent the College, competing in basketball, soccer, volleyball and netball.

One of the significant losses of the last two years was the inability of our College to participate in inter-school sports.

As a member of the Sports Association of Catholic Coeducational Secondary Schools (SACCSS) the College has a long tradition of competing against our fellow Catholic schools.

This participation in sport allows our young people to develop their communication skills, build a sense of community and learn respect and sportsmanship. It has obvious benefits for physical wellbeing but also emotional and social wellbeing.

This educational opportunity is just one way we, as a Catholic school, live out our ethos of developing the whole person.

We hope students in all year levels will make the most of the inter-school sports on offer this year and I would like to thank our Sports Coordinator Mikaela Hurst and Sports Trainee Ella Higgins for the huge effort to organise these events for our students.

Year 7 Parent Information Night

Thank you to the many parents and guardians who joined us for the Year 7 Information Night last Thursday.

Participation in your child’s secondary education differs from a primary setting but is no less significant. Your presence at the information night and continued support of these events send a strong signal to the young people in your care that you are interested in their education and value what they are doing at school.

Anniversary of the Apology

On 13 February 2008, the then Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd, publicly apologised to the Stolen Generations on behalf of the Australian Government.

The Stolen Generations are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families and their communities by successive colonial and Australian governments through various policies.

On this anniversary, we acknowledge and raise awareness of this history and ongoing impact this government policy has on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

COVID-19 update

Thank you to all families who have been diligent in testing with the RAT kits these first few weeks. Pressure on staffing has been significant with the College employing a larger than usual number of casual relief teachers to cover staff who are unwell.

Please continue to keep students at home if they have any signs or symptoms of illness.

COVID-19 third-dose vaccinations are now available to 16 and 17-year-olds who had their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine three or more months ago.

Supporting as many eligible students as possible to be vaccinated will help keep our school safe.

Getting vaccinated is one of the most important steps we can all take to get protect against COVID-19.

How to book an appointment

There are many convenient options to access vaccinations. These include statewide vaccination clinics, and your local GP or pharmacy.

You can book your appointment in a few different ways, including:

Jumpstart 2023

In 2021 the College introduced a whole school Jumpstart Program to enable students to meet their new teachers and begin new subjects, give teachers time to consider and plan for Term 1 and establish the 2022 timetable.

Last year our junior and senior Jumpstart programs started at different times. This impacted the length of the programs and access for senior students to some of their 2022 classes. Following a staff survey, the College has decided to continue with Jumpstart 2023, beginning on Monday 21 November for all students.

This alignment will mean our Year 10 and 11 2022 students (Jumpstart Year 11 and 12 2023) will finish on Thursday 1 December. Year 7 to 9 2022 students (Jumpstart Year 8 to 10 2023) will finish on Friday 2 December following the Junior Awards Ceremony and final day activities. The Senior Awards Ceremony will be in Week 2, 2023.

Timed Assessment Tasks (TATs)

Following robust and informative discussions on our current model for Year 7 and 8 Timed Assessment Tasks (TATs), a new model is in place for 2022.

TATs will be held for Mathematics and English only. The English TAT will be a writing task.

This aligns with the College’s School Improvement Framework (SIF) and Annual Action Plan (AAP) for improvement in writing.

TATs occur in Semester 1 on 9 June for Year 7 Mathematics and Year 8 English and Semester 2 on 8 November for Year 7 English and Year 8 Mathematics.

Students will experience exam-like conditions, with the whole year level sitting the TAT at one time. Formal entry and exit into the space, organisation of all required task materials and experience in assessment task preparation and study skills are the focus for TATs.

Senior Awards Ceremony

On Tuesday 22 February we will celebrate the outstanding achievements of our 2021 senior students in years 10 to 12.

Invitations have been emailed to families of award recipients.

The ceremony will be recorded so families who cannot attend on-site can view the presentations. An email update will be sent to families on Friday 18 February if COVID restrictions prevent famillies from attending in person.

Year level information sessions

It is a busy time as students and new staff settle into the College.

A range of information evenings are scheduled for various year levels. Our Year Level Coordinators will contact families with the details. Due to current COVID restrictions, these events are held online via Teams.

Sports Update

Senior Cricket

On Tuesday 8 February, our senior cricket season kicked off! After winning the Division 2 grand final last year, our seniors have started 2022 in Division 1.

Our first game was against Thomas Carr College (TCC) and the team didn’t hold back winning 3/179 to 9/71.

Leading scorers for the day were: Darcy Bishop 50 runs, not out; Ethan Thewma 51 runs, not out; Max Hoey 36 runs.

Special mention to Johnathon Wills who bowled three wickets for six runs over four overs. Spectacular effort!

The highlight of the match was the outstanding sportsmanship shown by Max Hoey (Year 10) and Darcy Bishop (Year 12) who supported a TCC student who hadn’t played before.

Well done to the boys and we wish them luck for their next four games.

Senior Netball

Our senior girls netball team also began their season last week, playing their first game against Mackillop College at Eagle Stadium in Werribee.

The girls played well throughout the game but unfortunately fell short of a win.

Special mention to our Year 10 students, Mia Hayes, Ava Holt, Annabelle Tomac and Lauren Martin who stepped up this week to fill the senior squad. The team will play Salesian College in the next round.

Year 10 Premier League

For the first in CRC Melton’s history, we have entered the Year 10 Premier League competition for seven weeks of Term 1. A huge thank you to the SACCSS Executive Board and our Principal Mrs Marlene Jorgenson for providing our students with another amazing sporting opportunity.

After missing out on playing an entire season of Premier League in 2020 and 2021, our Year 10 students were very excited to get out and represent the College last week.

Here is a wrap up of the results:

Netball: CRC Melton def Caroline Springs 30-7

Girls Basketball: TCC def CRC Melton 38-18

Boys Basketball A: TCC def CRC Melton 61-24

Boys Basketball B: CRC Melton and TCC drew 41-41

Girls Volleyball: CRC Melton def Caroline Chisholm 3-1

Boys Volleyball: CRC Melton def Caroline Chisholm 3-0

Girls Soccer: Caroline Springs def CRC Melton 11-0

Boys Soccer: Caroline Springs def CRC Melton 5-4

Congratulations to our netball and volleyball teams who came home with a win. One of the day’s highlights came from Saidi Alumbulwa who kicked three of our four goals in boys soccer. Well done Saidi!

Good luck to all teams in their Round 2 games this week.

Instrumental Music Lessons

The College offers a wider range of private instrumental music lessons in piano, guitar, drums, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and vocal tuition.

Playing a musical instrument has so many benefits. It improves your memory and mathematical ability, refines your time management and organisational skills and teaches you perseverance, to name a few.

Students who enrol in private instrumental lessons will also have an opportunity to perform at various College functions, such as school masses, liturgies, assemblies, concerts, and the wider community. The 25-minute classes are held during the school day.

For more details or to enrol in a lesson email Instrumental Music Coordinator, Daniel Askew: daskew@crcmleton.com.au

Parents and Friends Meeting

Families are welcome and encouraged to become involved in the College community through the Parents and Friends Association.

The Association provides an opportunity to meet other families, hear about what is going on at the College and have a say in new initiatives. Each meeting includes a short presentation from a College staff member.

Our first meeting for 2022 will be held on Wednesday 23 February at 7pm. More information about whether the meeting will be held on-site or online will be provided closer to the date.
