Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, which heralds the Church’s season of Lent.
Lent is when we prepare as a faith community to meet the risen Christ at Easter. It is a time for us to turn away from what keeps us from living the Gospel, and to remind ourselves that we are called to live lives based on justice.
To be just in the biblical sense is to be in the right relationship with God. As we prepare to meet Christ in his resurrected glory, we pray for a change of heart towards greater love of God and each other and we share our food, our wealth and our time with others in need.
Over these 40 days, may the Holy Spirit give us the strength to act justly, the courage to love tenderly and the faith to walk humbly with our God, that we might rejoice in the triumph of God’s justice in Jesus at Easter.
God of love and truth, you called us forth from the dust of earth and claimed us for Christ in the waters of baptism.
Look upon us as we enter these forty days bearing the mark of ashes.
Bless us on our journey through Lent to the waters of rebirth.
May our fasting be a hunger for justice;
our alms, a making of peace;
our prayer, the chant of humble and grateful hearts.
All that we do and pray is in the name of Jesus, for in his cross you proclaim your love now and forever.
Amen
Director of Catholic Identity
This week we commence our preparations for Lent with Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.
Our Faith and Mission Team sold pancakes to students and staff this morning to raise money for Caritas’ annual Project Compassion campaign. This begins our Lenten fundraising efforts, which will assist the work of Caritas.
Fundraising at the College is strictly limited to a few Catholic organisations with a proven record of assisting the most vulnerable in our society.
Caritas does not provide handouts but instead supports projects that break the cycle of poverty. Some examples include training midwives in Bangladesh, providing seeds for families in the Democratic Republic of Congo, providing water filters in Malawi or training farmers in Zimbabwe in conservation agriculture.
Each Mentor Group will have a Project Compassion Box and students are asked to participate in the various awareness-raising and fundraising efforts throughout the 40 days of Lent.
Last Sundays Gospel reading from Matthew instructs us that “if a man takes you to law and would have your tunic, let him have your cloak”. We are asked to love our enemies and pray for those persecuting us.
As we begin our preparations for Lent, we should take this opportunity to reach out to our enemies and give generously to those in need.
Last Thursday, we celebrated our inaugural Opening Mass as St Francis Catholic College.
Archbishop Most Rev Peter A. Comensoli was our main celebrant, and he was joined by fellow priests from our local parishes together with Father John O’Reilly.
Despite the stifling heat, our first official opening mass was a wonderful opportunity to come together with Cobblebank Campus students to celebrate the Eucharist as one College.
Our Ensemble sang beautifully, and it was a joy to see so many students willing to serve on the altar. In his homily, the Archbishop invited students to “Be Francis”.
Referencing our College patron, St Francis of Assisi, the Archbishop called on students to be humble, to live simply and to place their trust in God. It was a wonderful start to our year as St Francis Catholic College.

Our 2022 College Dux, Andria Jojo, delivered an inspiring speech to students. Andria balanced extracurricular activities and student leadership while dedicating the time required to achieve outstanding academic results.
Andria received an ATAR of 97.45 and will begin studying a Bachelor of Design at The University of Melbourne this year.
Andria spoke about balance in Year 12, being committed to your goals and the outcome you want to achieve. She also spoke about taking the subjects you enjoy and are passionate about.
"I encourage the new class of Year 12s, and the younger students approaching VCE to truly examine their goals, learn to study efficiently and effectively, take on challenges you can grow from, and concentrate their best efforts to achieve what is most important to them," Andria said.
"Spend the little time that you have in Year 12 wisely, have fun, and learn lots. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others, your friends, and especially your teachers to make the most of what is available."
You can read Andria's full speech here.
Our Class of 2022 were among more than 64,000 VCE and VCAL students to be awarded their Year 12 certificate at the end of last year.
Below is a snapshot of results for Victorian students.
You’ll see that last year, 49,581 students graduated with their VCE – a completion rate of 98% per cent, while another 15,163 students graduated with their VCAL, 6% more than last year. The excellence in VCE is highlighted by the 13,607 students who received a study score of 40 or more, and the 3350 who were awarded the VCE Baccalaureate.
The St Francis Catholic College teaching mantra is 12 months of growth for 12 months of learning.
Our teachers meet regularly in our Collaborative Curriculum Planning (CCP) time. The time is used to reflect on teaching practices and implement new strategies that allow for increased differentiation within the lesson and classroom.
Last Tuesday, the College Data Plan was launched, and staff looked at student data to consider how this would inform classroom practice.
We use a reflect, review, revise and reset process to ensure the learning experience meets the needs of all learners in our classroom.
Our dedicated staff will continue to work positively around the challenges students may face in their learning environment.
We thank families for their continued support as we all work in partnership to achieve the best outcomes for our students.

A very successful pancake breakfast was held this morning at the College to mark the first day of Lent, Shrove Tuesday.
The Faith and Mission Team would like to thank the College community for their generous donations of pancake mix with over 80 containers donated. We would also like to thank the staff who volunteered their time to make more than 500 pancakes and the students and staff who sold the hot pancakes this morning.
The Faith and Mission Team, also took part in the launch of Project Compassion this morning, which was an enriching experience for the students.
They learned how to make a difference for future generations by doing what we can today to help those in need. As a team, we also discussed initiatives for this term including Project Compassion fundraisers and Diversity Week and Harmony Day (20-26 March).
All mentor groups will receive their Project Compassion boxes tomorrow and students are encouraged to donate during the weeks leading to Easter.

In our Year 9 Rite Journey classes, students are preparing for their calling and departure ceremonies where they will invite a significant person in their lives to have a conversation with them about transitioning into young adolescents.
In this activity, students discussed the qualities and behaviours exhibited by children and then compared them to adults.
This generated a lot of insightful conversation about their own behaviour and what they would like to discuss during their ceremonies.
Our Calling and Departure Ceremony for Year 9 boys will be held on Wednesday 1 March from 7pm.
Our Calling and Departure Ceremony for Year 9 girls will be held on Wednesday 8 March from 7pm.

Our Year 10 Premier League teams demonstrated great sportsmanship in all their games, notching up six wins this week.
Intensity was high during the boys’ B team basketball game. The boys worked hard, came together and pushed through the heat this week, coming out with a great one-point win. The boys’ basketball A team also won this week, working hard to maintain their unbeaten run in the competition so far.
Our girls’ basketball team also came out with a win this week against Emmanuel College. The girls kept fighting, working hard and supporting each other to keep their winning streak alive.
Our boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams won this week, improving their skills and working hard. Competing against strong sides from Antonine College, our volleyballers didn’t let up and brought home two wins.
Unfortunately, our girl’s netball team didn’t get the win they had worked so hard for. Better luck this week girls!
Our boys’ soccer team showed great sportsmanship sharing water with the Antonine College team and, in return, asking a few of their boys to wear the St Francis uniform and play for our team! They had a lot of fun and kept trying throughout the game but couldn’t score a win.
Our senior girls’ netball team and boy’s cricket team played MacKillop College this week but could not get the upper hand in their games.
Our netball team played hard but was affected by the heat – we hope cooler temperatures favour them this week.
Our senior boys’ cricket team were a few players down this week and gave it their all, but it wasn’t enough to beat MacKillop. The boys showed great mateship and supported each other through the game and heat.
