Melton Campus students and staff gathered in Sheehan Stadium for their Opening Mass on Friday. It was a special morning and an opportunity to celebrate our faith as a community.
During the Mass, there was a beautiful display of devotion as students brought up sacred items, including bindles made on our Year 12 Retreat. These bindles, carrying prayers to God, symbolised the heartfelt intentions and aspirations of our Year 12 cohort, lifted in prayer and offered with love.
The Mass itself was a St Francis Votive Mass that lovingly honoured our patron, St Francis.
As we reflected on the life of St Francis, we were inspired by Fr Frank to emulate St Francis’ example of humility, compassion, and service to others. It was a powerful reminder of the values that guide us as a Franciscan school and the importance of putting our Faith in Action (our school motto).
The Responsorial Psalm Shepherd Me, O God, Psalm 23, was a highlight, calling our school community to place our trust in God.
“God is my shepherd, so nothing shall I want, I rest in the meadows of faithfulness and love, I walk by the quiet waters of peace.”
These words assure us that anything is possible through God’s love. They are also reminiscent of our new 2024 College Mission Theme: “Start by doing what is necessary, then do what’s possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible”.
It is a reminder that even in tough times, it is our faith in this love that wraps us up in God’s warm embrace, helping us achieve the impossible.
On Ash Wednesday, students gathered in Mentor Groups to reflect and receive ashes.
The ashes are from burnt palms blessed on Palm Sunday last year and are a reminder of our mortality and the transient nature of life. We are encouraged to put our faith into action and approach each moment with love.
Below is the reflection shared by students and staff on Ash Wednesday.
Director of Faith and Mission
It has been another very busy week at St Francis Catholic College.
On Tuesday we celebrated the success of our 2023 graduating students and acknowledged the academic achievements and efforts of our Year 10 and 11 students.
It was wonderful to have so many parents and guardians join us to celebrate our students’ hard work.
In 2023, our Year 12 cohort consisted of 148 students. Of these, 78% completed a VCE pathway, while 22% selected a VCE VM or VCAL pathway.
Upon completing Year 12, 91 students applied for a university position and 93.41% received an offer. Thirteen students received more than one offer of a place at university.
Our 2023 graduates are now commencing studies in Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne, Law and Architecture at Deakin University and Engineering at Swinburne University, to name but a few. There are also 17 students who have gained an apprenticeship.
We congratulate all our 2023 Year 12 students who have successfully transitioned to meaningful post-secondary pathways.
Last Friday we celebrated our Melton Campus opening Mass.
Fr Frank spoke passionately to our students about the purpose of Lent and St Francis’ love of the cross. It is always a powerful moment when we have 1200 students reverently celebrating the Eucharist and as always I was very proud of how students participated during Mass.
Our ensemble added a wonderful atmosphere to the occasion with their singing and music. After Mass, Fr Frank commented on how impressed he was with our students’ reverence, particularly during communion.
Our opening Mass is a wonderful way to begin the academic year and I thank everyone who made this possible.
Prompted by discussions raised at our recent Parents and Friends meeting, the College has reviewed the deadline for a changeover from the CRC to the SFCC uniform.
Considering the high cost of living that families are experiencing, it has been decided to extend the changeover period to the end of 2025.
This gives families three years to change to the new uniform (2023-2025). When your child grows out of an item, please replace it with the new SFCC uniform.
CRC uniforms can be sold or donated to the four remaining schools in the Federation.
All students new to the College and those commencing Year 7 must purchase the SFCC uniform.

Last Tuesday, the College held its 2023 Senior Awards Ceremony to acknowledge students' achievements in years 10, 11 and 12 across various criteria.
It was wonderful to see so many students walk across the stage, with 145 receiving an excellence award. These acknowledge academics, citizenship, community participation, consistent effort, sports, and leadership achievements, including the Fr Brian Glasheen Religious Education Scholarship and the University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Scholarship.
In her speech, our 2023 College Dux, Teresa Sant, thanked all the teachers who supported her on her journey. Teresa balanced study, family commitments and extracurricular activities to achieve outstanding academic results.
Thank you to the families who attended to see their child receive an award. We know how proud you must be. To all students who did their very best in 2023, regardless of whether you received an award or not, we celebrate your achievements and congratulations.

The Year 12 Information Evening held online last Wednesday was presented by a range of staff who will support students in their final year of secondary school.
Parents and guardians could access the pre-recorded presentation until Friday and could ask questions via an online form.
One of the positives to come out of the last few years is the ability to stream information to families without the need to be on-site.
With the current roadworks at Melton Campus, we are mindful of the limited parking and the logistics some families face in getting to after-school meetings.
Education is a three-way partnership between families, students and the College. Working together, we can achieve great outcomes for your child.

Our Project Compassion fundraising campaign got off to a great start last week, with sales of pancakes raising $150 at Melton Campus and $232 at Cobblebank Campus.
That’s almost 400 pancakes sold by our Faith and Mission Team in just over an hour at both campuses on Shrove Tuesday! Well done, and thank you to everyone for the excellent kickstart to our annual campaign.
Remember, your child’s mentor group has a donation box and all contributions will be gratefully accepted until the end of the term. You can also donate online.
Year 8 student leaders from our Cobblebank Campus, accompanied by our Director of Faith and Mission Rachel Prince, attended the official launch of Project Compassion hosted by Caritas Australia last week at the Academy of Mary Immaculate secondary school in Fitzroy.
Archbishop of Melbourne, Most Rev Peter Comensoli, commissioned the student leaders, urging them to consider how they were called, chosen and sent by God to serve others.
“Project Compassion is a way of saying that we have been called and chosen and sent with love to serve those in need,” Archbishop Comensoli said.
Being Shrove Tuesday, the students were treated to pancakes and met with other student leaders to exchange fundraising ideas for Project Compassion.
As we begin our annual Lenten Project Compassion journey, we will feature inspirational stories about how your donations can make a real difference in the lives of people from across the world.
This week, you will hear Ronita’s story.
A resilient woman from the Philippines, Ronita lives with her husband and two children in Quezon City.
With the help of Caritas, Ronita went back to school to finish her education so she could earn an income to support her children. Click here to watch.
A reminder to students and families that with the new timetable, our lunch service is during the Big Break at 11.25am.

We accept cash, card or contactless payments. Contactless payments via student phones are not accepted after the first school bell.
Lunches can be ordered online via the Flexischools app. Simply download the app from the Apple or Google stores and follow the prompts to create an account. Once set up, click Order Food to see the online menu, place your order, and pay.
We're thrilled to announce the Cobblebank Campus canteen opened yesterday.
All families have been emailed instructions on how to order using the Flexischools app.
Simply download the app from the Apple or Google stores and follow the prompts to create an account. Once set up, click Order Food to see the online menu, place your order, and pay.
All online orders must be placed by 9am and can be collected by your child at Big Break (11.25am).
Regrettably, we can only provide cashless transactions due to facility constraints. If your child wants to purchase food from the canteen during their breaks, they will need a debit card or voucher that you can buy via Flexischools.
The vouchers are valued at either $5 or $10 and can be used to buy any items from the canteen. They do not have to be used in one transaction and have no expiry date.
Your child can collect vouchers from the canteen on the day they are purchased. Please be aware that they are non-transferable, non-refundable and cannot be replaced if lost.
