Each week in the lead-up to Easter, our Melton Campus students and staff will attend their House Mass at our parish church, St Catherine of Siena.
We are very blessed to have a church next door and the support of Fr Michael Moody.
Cobblebank Campus is equally blessed to have St Anthony of Padua Church only a short distance away and the support of Fr Alex Clemente, Fr Wilford Ramos Urmaza and Fr Lucas Myint.
This year so far, Cobblebank’s Bakhita House Mass was celebrated on 8 February and Melton’s Bakhita and Catherine House Masses were held on 15 and 21 February respectively.
We are also fortunate to have teachers Jonathan Antony and Andrew Sciberras who are very skilled in the areas of liturgy and put great effort into ensuring these Masses are special for each House.
The Mass is a profound and beautiful expression of faith, tradition and community. It is steeped in centuries of ritual and symbolism and is the ultimate celebration of Christ’s love for us.
The candles, music and singing, images and symbols, and the collective voices from the congregation all combine to create an atmosphere of reverence and awe.
One of our Faith and Mission goals for the year is to interweave our Franciscan charism more vividly throughout the College. Our House Masses are a powerful platform to do this.
At the Melton Campus House Masses held so far, Fr Michael has arranged for each student to receive a bookmark featuring the Peace Prayer attributed to St Francis. We are currently organising these special bookmarks for Cobblebank students too.
Fr Michael reminded us of the power of this prayer and said he strongly believed that if all members of our community said this prayer on a regular basis we would have more peace, more love and understanding for each other.
During this season of Lent, please consider saying this prayer as a family and reflect upon the impact it might have.
We also ask you to keep Fr Michael in your prayers as he is currently unwell.
All families are invited and welcome to attend our House Masses.

It was an exciting day last Thursday as I watched our building contractor, A W Nicholson, begin to pour the slab for our new Junior Learning Hub at Melton Campus.
Demolition of the original B Block is now complete. We did however keep the beautiful mural that was created and painted by our past students. This section of remaining wall will be incorporated into the new building. Pouring of the ground floor slab is now complete with the first-floor slab due for completion late March.
The new building will contain general-purpose learning areas, a kitchen and al fresco dining area, science labs and technology spaces.
Congratulations to our Sports Coordinator Claudia Alp who organised not one but two swimming carnivals on consecutive days last week.
Just like the Katy Perry song, it was hot and then cold, but on both days our students competed enthusiastically in both the swim and novelty events gaining valuable House points for participation.
Results from both days will be in next week’s newsletter.
Last Thursday afternoon I attended the launch of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) Vision for Instruction.
The aim of the position statement is to give clear guidance on what is instructional best practice. Resources and support can then be designed for use by all schools across Victoria.
The vision is based on evidence gathered from The Science of Learning, an area of study in which we have seen considerable new research unfold over the past ten years.
This new MACS model outlines the need for explicit teaching. This Explicit Instruction Model requires teachers to design lessons that begin with teacher-guided instruction and gradually shift responsibility for learning to the student with modelling and guided practice.

Cobblebank Campus families who drive along Adelong Boulevard before and after school are reminded to not park across driveways in the street.
Adelong Blvd is busy before and after school as students move to and from vehicles.
Blocking a driveway, stopping on the road illegally or allowing your child to step out of the car and onto the road or dart out between cars is dangerous and puts the safety of all pedestrians and motorists at risk.
If you pick up your child on Adelong Blvd, please use the parking bays available.
We have had a great start to school sports this year.
Our Melton Campus students participated in two SACCSS one-day tournaments last week; Senior Futsal and Intermediate Badminton.
Our futsal teams showed great sportsmanship, hard work and demonstrated fantastic resilience. Even though both teams fell short of finals, they all held their heads high and represented our College with good spirit.
Intermediate badminton was a fantastic experience for all players. Our Badminton B girls did us proud, making it into finals and just falling short of the grand final.
Our Melton Campus senior netball and cricket teams are currently first on the ladder having won three out of three games placing them in a great spot for finals.
Team | Result | SFCC Ladder position |
Senior Netball | SFCC 43 d Thomas Carr College 27 | 1 |
Senior Cricket | SFCC 98 d Emmanuel College 63 | 1 |
The Swimming Carnival was a great success for both campuses. Despite the unpredictable weather all students did a great job participating in events and made the days enjoyable. More results to come next week!
Jess Hodge and Sophie Cryan, Sports Assistants
On Monday 12 February, the Melton Campus senior boys’ futsal team participated in an exhilarating SACCSS tournament at the Latrobe Sports Centre.
The senior boys were successful at the beginning of the tournament with three wins and a draw, but unfortunately fell short in reaching the final after losing their last round robin game.
Year 12 student Saidi was the standout player for St Francis and finished the day as the team's top goal scorer. Overall, it was a fantastic effort by all our participants.
Tony Gavran, Senior Boys Futsal Coach
In Round 3 of the SACCSS Senior Netball competition SFCC Melton Campus played Thomas Carr College at their home ground.
Despite the high intensity game and our biggest competition to date this year, all players showed great resilience and an uplifting spirit, which led us to a win.
There was great improvement from the last game. We used rolling subs and new tactical game plays to help us win the match by 16 goals. This places us first overall on the ladder and in a great position to make finals.
Lauren Martin and Ebony Raudino, Captains, Senior Netball Team
Last week, a Melton Campus team of 16 Year 10 students played a series of round robin badminton games at Eagle Stadium in Werribee.
Our players brought their best game, delivering some truly intense matches that had us all on the edge of our seats.
A big shout-out to Sophia and Samantha who made it to the semi-finals.
Imra Banu, Intermediate Badminton Coach
Two of our Cobblebank Campus teachers, Angelica Baustista and Jessica Meegama, joined fellow graduate teachers at the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) Catholic Leadership Centre last week to share pedagogical strategies and ask questions about what it means to be a teacher in a Catholic school.
Graduates within their first year of teaching began the day by celebrating Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, led by the Archbishop of Melbourne, Most Rev Peter Comensoli.
During the sessions that followed Angelica and Jessica had the opportunity to connect with fellow graduates from both the primary and secondary school sector and gain a deeper understanding of the mission and vision of Catholic education in fostering the growth of all students.
Both said the professional learning experience would help them further develop their teaching practices and they are looking forward to meeting everyone again as their careers progress.
We extend a warm welcome to all the graduate teachers in our community and the broader teaching profession.

Our Unit 1 Food Studies students welcomed former teacher Martin Attard to their classroom this week to cook some traditional Maltese dishes.
Students are currently identifying foods that can be traced back to early cultures.
They learned how to make Għaġin il-forn, a baked macaroni pasta and a variety of Maltese pastries from Imaqaret to traditional village biscuits.
They also tried Kinnie - a bittersweet orange-flavoured soft drink infused with the herbs and spices of the Mediterranean.
