Of late, the hot weather of summer has been replaced by chilly mornings and warm sunny days. The sun is moving on, the Equinox is today, and we move further into the colourful autumn season.
Autumn is full of colour, with leaves of all hues falling to the ground as temperatures cool and we slowly transition to winter. The transition through the seasons reminds us that there is a time for all things.

Last Wednesday, we welcomed back our Year 12 2022 students. It is always wonderful to hear what they are doing in life after school. Many have commenced studies at various universities, while others are loving full-time work and apprenticeships.
The vast majority of our graduating students have viable pathways to post-secondary education. This is a core aim of the College – to provide a meaningful career pathway upon completion of secondary school.
We once again congratulate our Year 12 2022 students and look forward to hearing about their achievements in the future.
Last year Harmony Day was celebrated at the College for the first time. In 2023 the event has expanded to a whole week and is a celebration of a broader inclusion perspective.
Our school has a multicultural and diverse community, with our student population representing 43 countries of birth and speaking 26 languages at home.
This diversity brings innovation and creativity to our community and allows for an exchange of ideas and viewpoints.
In his Post Synodal Apostolic Exhortation to young people, Christus Vivit, Pope Francis notes that migrants to Australia serve to remind us “of a basic aspect of our faith, that we are “strangers and exiles on the earth” (Heb 11:13). He goes on to ask young people to show respect to all migrants who are fortunate enough to come to our land and to afford them the same inalienable dignity as every other human being.
In 2022, I worked with a representative group of students to develop our College Inclusion Policy.
The rationale for this Policy was similar to Pope Francis’ message.
As a College, we firmly believe that all in our community should feel safe, accepted and welcome so that everyone can flourish.
Having received feedback from staff and students, the Inclusion Policy will now be rolled out to our students. The Student Inclusion Group is currently developing its communication strategies so that the policy can begin to be enacted in Term 2.

Parents and guardians are reminded to register for this week's webinar by presenters from The Resilience Project on Thursday 23 March from 6.30pm to 8pm.

Through emotionally engaging stories and practical strategies, this session will help parents and guardians understand the benefits of letting go of shame, perfection, ego and control.
It will combine powerful research with candid storytelling, along with a few laughs to help support what is arguably the toughest job in the world... being a parent or guardian!
Why attend the webinar?
When building positive mental health in schools, we know the best impact happens when we work together.
The Authentic Connection presentation helps do just that by sharing those same evidence-based strategies being taught in the classroom, so they can be also practised at home and beyond.
Attendees will also be reminded of the importance of their own wellbeing - we bring the best versions of ourselves to our family and community, when we make time to look after ourselves.
Click here for more information on the webinar and The Resilience Project.
Please note that this presentation will be recorded for those who are unable to attend or would like a recap.
Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing - Melton Campus
As we enter Week 8 of Term 1, there has been a lot happening at the College as our students continue their learning journey.
Year 7 and 9 students are participating in the final two NAPLAN tests with Thursday scheduled day for catch-ups, if students have missed a test.
We continue to employ tutors to support learning across Year 7 to 10. This is based on teacher recommendation and identification through their work with students and their PAT Reading and Numeracy data.
The Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) aims to support students to be at standard by focusing on skills to improve literacy and numeracy. The tutors are also available during Homework Club. The VCE GAP Tutors continue to work with VCE students to enhance learning and improve outcomes.
Our Parent, Student and Teacher interviews will take place at the start of Term 2, which is different from previous years.
We hope this provides more time to make an appointment - bookings open at the end of Term 1 and remain open during the holidays.
I encourage families to book interviews to discuss their child’s progress. It is important that students attend these interviews to share in the conversations taking place, reflecting on what they have achieved and the way forward.
Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching
Today the College embraced and celebrated the many cultures that make up our community as part of Harmony Day.
The full College assembly brought together students and staff from Melton and Cobblebank campuses and was a joyous reflection of the many things we have in common – a willingness to embrace diversity, be inclusive and appreciate the traditions and stories from our cultural backgrounds.
As always, our Assembly began with an Acknowledgement of Country by our senior students.
Guest speaker Nyingot Reech shared her inspiring story during the assembly. Born in South Sudan, Nyingot was four years old when her family was forced to flee their home country due to the ongoing civil war.
They eventually settled in Australia, and Nyingot dreamed of becoming a youth counsellor for multicultural young people.
She is currently studying Youth Work and Community Development at Australian Catholic University. In the next five years, she hopes to start a not-for-profit organisation to help refugees and immigrants adjust to their new lives in Australia.
Following Nyingot’s presentation, we enjoyed a showcase of the diverse cultures within our school.
Year 7 Cobblebank student Demitri led a parade of students wearing cultural dress through the stadium. It was a fantastic prelude to performances by our Indian, Congalese and Pasifika students. All students received a rousing and enthusiastic response!
We are truly grateful to everyone who got involved, whether it was by wearing the colour orange or their cultural dress. We look forward to building on this wonderful celebration of our College community.

Last Friday, seven students and two staff representing our Melton and Cobblebank campuses attended St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne for the Mass of St Patrick celebrated by Archbishop Peter Comensoli as part of Catholic Education Week.
Proudly carrying the St Francis Catholic College banner for the first time, the students joined hundreds of primary and secondary students from across Melbourne.
The Mass was a beautiful experience; students from Avila College provided wonderful orchestral music for the Mass and Simmons Catholic College served reverently at the altar.
The Archbishop reminded students of their importance in the Mission of the Church despite their young age drawing reference to the fact that St Patrick began his mission at the age of 16 and that the Prophet Jeremiah was also called at a young age.
It was a good opportunity for us all to witness that we are part of something larger, namely, the community of Catholic schools in Melbourne. All students expressed excitement at attending next year as well!
Below is a reflection on the event by Year 7 student Ater.
"When you first arrive the first thing you could hear were the sounds of the bells before mass. All around the Cathedral are statues of saints and other people in the Catholic community such as St Patrick, St Francis, Mary Mackillop, St Catherine, and Archbishop Mannix.
During the mass there was an opportunity for all the Catholic schools to display their banners and represent their school and that is exactly what we did. There were so many different Catholic schools there. The cathedral was amazing, and I hope just as many people volunteer next year and get to see the cathedral and learn about St Patrick.
During the mass (the Archbishop) said that St Patrick was taken prisoner by Irish Raiders, so he turned to God for help, and he made the decision to follow God at age 16. He said that you do not need to be 16 to be like St Patrick, you can start following God at any age."
Yesterday our Year 10 Media class hosted a Zine Fair to raise money for the College’s Project Compassion appeal and share their hard work with those who visited.
Zines are a short-run self-made publication often dubbed a mini-magazine. They allow creators to explore topics of interest to them and share that passion with a wider audience.
The class spent two weeks creating their unique zines by hand and enjoyed talking about them with students and staff.
More than $30 was raised for the appeal and we thank all who visited and supported the class.

A huge congratulations to Year 10 student Jack Morrow who recently became the Victorian Under 15 Boys 100-metre backstroke champion.
Over the Labour Day long weekend, Jack competed in the Victorian Swimming Age Championships at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Melbourne.
Jack competed in eight individual swimming events resulting in five finals and also swam in five team relays. He became the Victorian Champion in the 15-year-old boys 100m backstroke, winning gold in this event with a time of 58.49s.
Jack also won a silver medal in 200m backstroke, 400m freestyle and 800m freestyle.
We wish Jack the best of luck at his next competition, the National Age Championships on the Gold Coast in April.
Last week our Year 10 Premier League teams fought for a spot in the finals.
Our boys’ basketball teams came out with a win and a loss. Both teams displayed great sportsmanship, and all encouraged each other on and off the court. The Boys’ A team are fourth on the ladder and their win this week has secured them a safe spot in the semi-finals.
Our girls’ basketball team played well but unfortunately didn’t get the win they wanted. They demonstrated excellent skills and talent, finishing second on the ladder and placing them in a great position for finals.
The girls’ netball team didn’t have much luck against Salesian College but didn’t give up and kept fighting to the last second. The girls are fourth on the ladder and will St Monica’s College this week.
Both volleyball teams are in a great position for finals, with the girls sitting at the top of the ladder and the boys fourth. Both teams go out every week and give their all on the court. They are always trying and never give up.
Over at MacPherson Park, our boys’ soccer team went head-to-head with Salesian College in their final match of the season.
Salesian started the stronger of the two sides, cutting through our defensive line to score two at halftime.
Our boys grew into the contest in the second half finding a breakthrough with Joseph Kennedy scoring in the opening minutes, coupled with a handful of fine saves by goalkeeper Oliver Massaquoi. Thokuei Monykuer launched a header into the goal with five minutes left on the clock to equalise the score.
Man of the match went to Shukuru Balebanga who consistently outclassed Salesian’s midfield to drive the ball into the offensive zone.
However, the overall result was largely influenced by the contribution of all players who left it all on the pitch in what was possibly their best game this season.
All on the team continuously support each other no matter if they are losing or winning and have made some great friendships through the season.
Last Tuesday, our senior mixed senior netball team made up of students from Years 10 to 12 headed to Craigieburn Stadium to participate in the SACCSS Senior Mixed Netball Sports Day.
The team played four games on the day and although they did not make the final rounds, we congratulate them on their great approach to each game, and for playing across a range of different positions. Thank you to Mia (Year 11) for volunteering as our scorer for the day.
