Last Saturday, 1 May, was the Feast of St Joseph the Worker, instituted in 1955 by Pope Pius XII.
Joseph is presented in the Gospels as someone who worked with his hands and the Church wished to indicate that work is linked not just to productivity, but also to holiness.
A further focus on St Joseph came with the Apostolic Letter Patris corde (With a Father’s Heart) where Pope Francis recalled the 150th anniversary of the declaration of St Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To mark the occasion, the Holy Father proclaimed a Year of Saint Joseph from 8 December 2020 to 8 December 2021.
Pope Francis describes St Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows.
In his letter, Pope Francis notes how, “Every day, for over forty years, following morning prayer”, he has “recited a prayer to St Joseph taken from a nineteenth-century French prayer book.” This prayer, he says, expresses devotion and trust:

On Monday 4 February 1980, 55 students commenced their secondary education at Catholic Regional College Melton in two homerooms, 7 Brown and 7 Gold.
From these humble beginnings, the College has grown over the past 40 years to become a thriving Year 7 to 12 Catholic secondary college catering for 1140 students.
How wonderful that 41 years later we are able to celebrate the success of the College. All past students and staff are warmly invited to attend our Open Day on Sunday 23 May. Our student leaders will run tours of our facilities and there will be displays of memorabilia. Most importantly, though, the day will be an opportunity for our vast community of staff and students to reconnect and see the changes that have occurred over time.
I encourage you to share the details of the Open Day with any former students and staff - it promises to be a special day and unique opportunity to gather and celebrate this significant milestone.
In the lead up, photographs from our archives are being posted daily on our social media pages. Click here to take a look at the people and events that have been part of our story.

With the winter months approaching, staff and students are reminded of the need to continue our best practice in infection control. Although the risk of COVID-19 is thankfully lower, we continue to reinforce positive infection control behaviours.
The most important things we can do to reduce the risk of infection transmission are to:
Education settings are uniquely placed to integrate these messages into everyday learning and practice through role-modelling and formal and informal learning opportunities. Students are asked to continue to be vigilant and remain home if unwell.

The College
successfully hosted and participated in the Melton City Council Youth Engagement Forum last Friday (30 April).
It was a fantastic opportunity for schools in the local area, including Staughton College, Melton Secondary College, Lakeview College and Kurrunjang College, to collaborate and discuss physical activity, mental wellbeing, and healthy eating.
The students were asked questions regarding the barriers and challenges that prevent healthy eating and participating in physical activity. They also expressed what they believed were the leading causes of mental wellbeing issues for young people and how these challenges could be overcome in the future.
We were fortunate to have Melton City councillors Bob Turner, Ashleigh Vandenberg, Lara Carli, Julie Shannon and Sophie Ramsey, spend the afternoon with us, listening to our students.
The council will use information from the forum to create its action plan for 2021 -2025.
When the plan is finalised, students will hear how their contributions have directly impacted health and wellbeing planning in Melton.
It was clear on Friday that our students have a lot to contribute and we congratulate them on speaking positively about issues they find important. They were excellent representatives of our College and played a meaningful role in shaping outcomes for young people in Melton.

A weekly Year 8 Dodgeball Competition will be held every Friday for the next month to promote student physical activity and positive social interactions and connections among the cohort.
The games began last Friday (30 April) with students representing their house and playing against their peers to earn house points. After the completion of the round-robin series, two grand finals will be played to crown the male and female dodgeball champions.
With help from members of the student leadership team, the first day of the competition saw many moments of teamwork, laughter, competitiveness, skill, athleticism and sportsmanship.
We look forward to many more wonderful experiences and competition in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to Year 12 student Jackson Govic who recently became a First Dan black belt in Shotokan Karate.
The grading took a total of 12 hours, and in the first four hours, Jackson had done over 465 push-ups, sit ups, and squat kicks.
According to his Sensei, this program is one of the most physically intensive and gruelling of all the martial art gradings. His sister Dayna, a former CRC student, also completed her grading during this time.
Jackson is extremely grateful for the support and encouragement offered by his friends, family and teachers.
The determination, skill and resilience required to complete the grading are qualities that Jackson is also appling to his Year 12 studies.
Well done on this momentous achievement Jackson!

Our Senior AFL teams began their season last week with fantastic wins. The boys made the most of their home game, winning against Thomas Carr College 102 to 72. Our girls travelled to Bundoora to play St Monica’s College and won 58 to 31.
We wish both teams luck with their upcoming games.
Last Wednesday our Year 7 students began their first round of Premier League with eight teams competing against St Monica’s College in Round 2 of the season. Round 1 was a bye for the College.
Although the girls basketball team was the only one to notch up a win last week, students were very excited to compete and enjoyed the day.
Premier League games will be held on Wednesday afternoons in the coming weeks.
Congratulations and good luck to Oliver Dreaver (Year 7), Jack Morrow (Year 8), Marlee Leetham (Year 9) and James Morrow (Year 11) who will travel to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Monday 10 May to represent SACCSS and the College in the Victorian School Association Swimming Competition.
Year 8 student Sa Pilimai has been earned a place in the Victorian U16 Country Men’s Basketball team for the upcoming Australian Junior Championships in July. We congratulate Sa on his achievement and wish him all the best in the competition.
