Weekly Reflection

Laudato Si’ Week 2022 marks the seventh anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical on care for our common home. The week is a celebration of Pope Francis’ encyclical responding to God’s call to care for our common home.

Pope Francis has invited Catholics worldwide to reflect, pray and take action during this week. We are asked to come together to discern the lessons of this moment prayerfully. While the world experiences a history-defining crisis, we reflect and prepare to build a better world.

What does Laudato Si’ mean?

The title of an encyclical is typically drawn from the first words of the document. Encyclicals do not receive a topical title, but are named by their opening phrase.

The first words of Laudato Si’ are Italian and translated mean praise be to you. They are part of a quote from St Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures in which he praises God by meditating on the goodness of sun, wind, earth, water, and other natural forces.

This passage is particularly relevant to our College community, with our name changing to St Francis Catholic College in 2023.

The Canticle of the Creatures

Most High, all-powerful, good Lord, yours is the praise, the glory and the honor and every blessing.

To you alone, Most High, do they belong, and no one is worthy to speak your name.

Praised be you, my Lord with all your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, who is the day through whom you bring us light.

And he is lovely, shining with great splendor, for he heralds you, Most High.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Moon and Stars. In heaven you have formed them,
lightsome and precious and fair.

And praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Wind, through air and cloud, through calm
and every weather by which you sustain your creatures.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Water, so very useful and humble, precious and chaste.

Praised be you, my Lord through Brother Fire, by whom you light up the night, and he is handsome and merry, robust and strong.

Praised be you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains us and directs us

bringing forth all kinds of fruits and colored flowers and herbs.

Praised be you, my Lord through those who forgive for your love and who bear sickness and trial.

Blessed are those who endure in peace, for by you, Most High, they will be crowned.

Praised be you, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death from whom no living being can escape.

How dreadful for those who die in mortal sin! How blessed are those she finds in your most holy will for the second death can do them no harm.

O praise and bless my Lord, thank him and serve him humbly but grandly!

From the Principal

Last Sunday at my local parish of St Joseph’s in Port Melbourne there was great excitement.

The Carmelite Order runs the parish, so our parish priest Father Hugh was very animated as he told the congregation about a Carmelite - Titus Brandsma (pictured left), who was canonised in Rome on Sunday.

Titus was a contemporary of our parents, having lived during the time of World War 2. He was an academic, spiritualist, journalist and a loud detractor of the Nazi regime.

As a journalist, he wrote about the anti-Jewish actions of the Germans and spoke out against the deportation of Jews from Poland. He organised resistance to Nazi propaganda in the newspapers of Poland and urged the Catholic bishops to denounce the actions of the Nazis.

As a result of his strong and vocal opposition, Titus was interned in a concentration camp in Dachau. He was killed during medical experimentation using lethal injection.

Titus died because he spoke about his faith and was critical of how the Nazis were treating the Jews. In many ways, he is a contemporary who can inspire our community and wider society. It is a reminder to us all of the dignity of every individual.

In our own lives, each day, we see those who use social media to degrade and undervalue the inherent dignity of others. In our language and behaviours, we can sometimes fail to reflect the love that Christ asks us to show for everyone, regardless of disability, race, or religion.

This week, may we all be inspired by the martyr Titus Bradsma and have the courage to speak out when we see or hear others denigrate or belittle those around us.

Staffing update

With the onset of winter and the continued spread of COVID-19 infections, many staff are currently unable to attend work due to illness.

The leadership team monitors this daily and will do everything it can to keep the College open. We employ casual relief staff, cancel any unnecessary excursions, sport and professional learning and take every available avenue to ensure the College remains in face-to-face teaching mode.

However, already today, we were unable to staff Year 11 classes. All Year 11 students were asked to study at home in preparation for upcoming exams.

Tomorrow, Year 9 students will remain home due to severe shortage of Year 9 teachers. It will be a study at home day and there will be no formal classes.

While interruptions to classes will be kept to a minimum, please keep an eye on our communications, including your email inbox, to ensure you are up to date.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

Each year, all schools across Australia are asked to provide information about students with a disability who receive extra assistance.

This requires all teaching staff to record any adjustments to learning they have made for students who have diverse learning needs.

The data collected helps ensure all students have equitable access to the curriculum and enjoy successful learning outcomes.

More information is available below.

From the Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing

It was a pleasure to spend time with our Year 9 students on camp last week. Being away from the classroom, breathing in the country air, enriches each student’s learning experience, develops their resilience and deepens their relationships both with their peers and teachers.

Roses Gap is such a beautiful spot for a camp and it was wonderful to see the students surrounded by wildlife and spotting many animals in their natural habitat.

Of course camps such as this would not be possible without the planning and organisation provided by our dedicated staff. We thank all of the staff who were involved.

Discovering Resilience

On Monday 9 May, Martin Heppell from The Resilience Project hosted the Discovering Resilience webinar for parents and guardians. His presentation was engaging and informative, with many wise words about how to develop meaningful relationships with our young people.

If you were unable to attend, you can use the link below to watch a recording of the webinar. It will expire at midnight on Tuesday 24 May and is really worth watching.

World’s Greatest Shave

Three Year 12 students will shave their heads at Thursday’s College Athletics Carnival as part of the World’s Greatest Shave campaign.

Nicholas, Euan and Cooper (pictured above) will crop their locks to raise funds that will help families battling blood cancer receive the special care and support they need.

Money raised will also help scientists continue their search for better ways to diagnose and treat blood cancer more effectively, and ultimately find a cure.

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 students took part in RITE Journey camps last week. The boys and girls headed off to different campsites for three days of team building and new experiences.

Students experienced a range of activities including canoeing, basket weaving, bracelet making, high and low ropes, abseiling, giant swings, and more.

Camp staff commented on the high level of student involvement and how open they were to new experiences.

It was rewarding to see students interacting with one another in a different setting after two disrupted years of schooling.

Our Year 9 cohort should be incredibly proud of their efforts at camp!

Retired Judge Visits Year 10 Politics Class

Last week, retired County Court Judge Jane Patrick came to the College to share her experience and knowledge with our Year 10 Politics and Conflicts class.

Jane spoke about what it was like to be a Magistrate and a Judge in the County Court, what she experienced in her work and the challenges she faced.

Jane answered many of our questions about what it was like, the cases, the process, and the decisions on the job itself as well as her journey in the field of law. We learned a lot from Jane and thank her for taking the time to meet us.

Britney Luon - Year 10 student

This week is Law Week which features is a program of community events and activities that makes learning about the law easy.

It is designed to help Victorians understand their rights, find answers to their questions, know what help is available and how our legal system works.

The program is managed by the Victoria Law Foundation, with events and activities run by a range of organisations, including community legal centres, government bodies, community organisations, law firms, courts and tribunals.

Careers Expo

Last Thursday Year 10 students attended the Victorian Careers Show at Melbourne Showgrounds.

There was a large array of stalls representing universities, workplaces, community foundations and other organisations.

On the day, we had the opportunity to explore careers that interest us and ask questions about the pathways to our dream careers.

I visited stalls for Melbourne, Victoria, and Latrobe universities as I was interested in the veterinary courses they had to offer. A bonus on the day was the free goodies we collected!

Overall, students had a wonderful day learning about their future pathway options and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend the show.

Lucy Closter – 10 Reed

The Victorian Careers Show gave students the chance to explore various universities and institutes and career paths. Students were able to ask exhibitors questions about courses and options when they graduated from Year 12. The day was informative and allowed many students to discover opportunities they had not known about before.

Sports Update

Senior Boys Volleyball

Last week our senior boys Volleyball team played off in the SACCSS Volleyball grand final against Caroline Chisholm Catholic College at The State Netball Centre in Parkville.

After winning the first set convincingly, the boys unfortunately dropped the next three sets handing the win over to a skillful Caroline Chisholm team.

The boys played the season with great team spirit and it was fantastic to see their dedication to improving their skills by regularly attending training in their own time.

Although they didn’t bring home the win this year they are looking forward to next year and being stronger and even more hungry for the premiership.

Senior Boys AFL

Our senior boys AFL team played Emmanuel College at Allamanda Oval in Round 3 of the SACCSS season.

Despite being down one player, the boys were fearless in their efforts. There were many lead changes throughout the match and Emmanuel College ultimately ran away with the win, 82-67.

Darcy Bishop led from the front, showcasing his talent and endeavour with his score involvements. Bayliss Mifsud showed great commitment to the contest, making key contributions throughout the close encounter.

Kosta Masouras - Senior Boys AFL Coach

Senior Girls AFL

Last Friday our senior girls AFL team played Emmanuel College at Arnolds Creek.

Despite a slow start against a competitive team, the girls really came together in the second half to outscore their opponents. Although they lost by 10 points, the girls have renewed confidence and are looking forward to their last two games.

A huge thank you to our newly announced captain Amy Seymour and vice captain Caitlin Mai, for their strong leadership and endeavour throughout the season so far.

Year 8 Humanities

Year 8 students are immersing themselves in Japanese culture as part of their Humanities studies this term.

During this unit they will learn about ancient Japan, the rise of the Shoguns, the Japanese feudal system, the Samurai and art and culture.

As an introduction students created headbands with their Katakana names, took origami lessons and completed a chopstick challenge. The lesson was thoroughly enjoyed by all and a great start to a fascinating unit.

VCAL Team Building Excursion

Working together brings many rewards a class of VCAL students found out last week when they travelled to Lake Dewar in Myrniong.

Students worked together to solve different puzzles throughout the day and tested their resilience and strength with other challenges such as archery, paddle boarding and go-carting.

The program, led by Lake Dewar staff, is designed to promote personal growth in our students while they enjoy the company of peers in an outdoor setting. It also built on their teamwork, leadership and collaboration skills.

Women in Leadership Dinner

Last Thursday evening, several staff members attended the Women in Leadership dinner hosted by the Victorian Catholic Secondary Schools Deputy Principals’ Association at the Sofitel Hotel in Melbourne.

Guest speaker was Kate Roffey, President of the Melbourne Football Club, spoke about her many positions of leadership in a range of commercial, sport and not-for-profit organisations.

Kate shared some valuable insights on leadership:

  • Who you are gives you opportunities for leadership and leadership does not make or define who you are
  • The importance of taking opportunities as they arise because this may be the pathway to the leadership role you want.

It was a privilege to see the number of women in leadership across the Catholic sector.
