Weekly Reflection

Sunday 15 June joyfully celebrated the Feast of the Holy Trinity - a profound mystery at the heart of our Christian faith.

The Trinity reveals God as three persons in one divine essence: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is not merely a theological concept, but a living relationship of perfect love and unity.

Listening to the Homily, Father described this day as being clearest in the Gospel when the Trinity is revealed at the baptism of Jesus. In Matthew 3:16–17, we read: “As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment, heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased’”.

In this sacred moment, we see the Son standing in the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, and the voice of the Father proclaiming love. It is a beautiful image of divine communion and unity.

The Trinity reminds us that God is not distant or abstract - God is love (1 John 4:8). This love is not static but dynamic, always reaching out to embrace us. As we reflect on this feast, may we be drawn deeper into the mystery of God’s love and be inspired to live in unity, peace, and compassion with one another, especially with the concerns and injustices currently brewing in our world.

Let us, as a school community, rejoice in the mystery of the Trinity - God who is Love, revealed to us in perfect harmony.

From the Principal

Each year in August, all non-government schools across Australia participate in the Australian Government Schools Census. This census plays a vital role in shaping how funding is distributed and how educational needs are understood across the country.

At St Francis Catholic College, the census helps ensure our students and staff are accurately represented.

The information collected includes student enrolment numbers, year levels, gender, age, and other important characteristics such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status, students with disability, and those engaged in distance education. It also includes data about our teaching and non-teaching staff.

Why the August census matters to our school

The data gathered through the census has a direct impact on:

  • Government funding: the level of Commonwealth funding our College receives is linked to the information submitted. Accurate data helps ensure we receive the support necessary to provide quality education for all students.
  • Resource planning: census data allows the College and government agencies to better plan for future student and staffing needs.
  • Policy and program development: the census contributes to national education statistics that influence policy decisions and the development of targeted support programs.

Your role in the process

Parents, guardians, and students play an important role in ensuring that school records are up to date. If any of your contact, enrolment, or student details have recently changed, please inform the College office as soon as possible.

At St Francis Catholic College, we are committed to transparency and privacy. All information is reported securely and in accordance with Australian privacy laws.

Year 9 Media Students Live on Air

On Friday 13 June, the Year 9 Media classes from Melton and Cobblebank campuses visited SYN FM, a community youth radio network based at RMIT University.

Our media students took part in a workshop where they learned about radio broadcasting, including ethics and laws, and the technology of radio studios.

Students wrote their own segments and experienced the thrill of live broadcasting with support from SYN FM volunteer sound producers.

“The excursion to SYN FM was a fun experience. It was interesting to learn about how they make and perform radio shows, and what they can and cannot do or say on these shows.

“Both classes were given the opportunity to broadcast live on air. We picked the topics of discussion and the music played. I would gladly accept the chance to do this experience again, and I hope that everyone else will too. It was a great learning opportunity, and a great way to explore your skills and maybe even get some new ones!” Xavier, Year 9 Media student, Cobblebank Campus

“Visiting RMIT University for our Year 9 Media excursion was a fun and informative experience. We had a great time learning about how radio works and coming up with topics for our test run. After all the preparation, we went on air! This was nerve-racking, but I was excited about it. It was so fun and engaging despite the nerves.” Lily, Year 9 Media student, Melton Campus

It was terrific to see our learners push past the initial nerves to perform so well on live radio. Their broadcasts were engaging and informative, demonstrating they could produce entertaining and ethical content.

Celebrating Our Uni Step-Up Superstars!

We are thrilled to congratulate our outstanding students who successfully completed the Australian Catholic University (ACU) Uni Step-Up program earlier this year.

This program gave our students, Diana, Maya and Luke, the unique opportunity to study two first-year university units while still in secondary school - an impressive achievement that required focus, independence, and commitment beyond the classroom.

A special mention goes to Year 11 student Luke, who not only rose to the challenge as one of the youngest participants but also achieved a perfect Grade Point Average of 7.0! Luke's result is a remarkable testament to his academic excellence and future potential.

The Uni Step-Up program is designed to give students a taste of university life, boost their study skills, and support their transition into tertiary education, whether online or on campus. Our students took full advantage of this head start, and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.

We look forward to seeing how this experience shapes their senior studies and beyond.

Well done to all involved!

Sports Update

Year 7 Premier League

Just like that, another Year 7 Premier League season is over.

The Melton Girls Basketball, Girls Volleyball and Boys Soccer performed particularly well, representing the College in the SACCSS Semi Finals last Thursday.

While there won't be any grand final appearances for our Melton Year 7 teams this year, we are incredibly proud of the dedication they displayed throughout the season.

They gave up their breaks to attend training sessions and showed determination, strength in adversity and a never-give-up attitude throughout all their matches.

Congratulations to our Cobblebank students who have also had an excellent season.

Four teams competed in the semi-finals last week, with three advancing to their respective grand finals this Thursday.

We wish the Girls Volleyball and Boys and Girls Basketball teams all the very best for the next stage of the competition. Win or lose, they have made us incredibly proud!

We look forward to welcoming all students who participated in Year 7 Premier League back for Year 8 Premier League in 2026. Claudia Alp, Director of Sport, Cross-Campus

AFL Junior Gala

On Tuesday 17 June we had a wonderful day out at Greenvale for the Division 2 SACCSS AFL Junior Gala day.

Our Year 7 and 8 students played so well in cold conditions and had such positive attitudes throughout the day. They showed some impressive skill, with Cobblebank winning one out of three games and Melton just missing out on finals by winning two out of three games, their only loss coming from the Division 2 premiers. Year 7 English Incursion

Last Friday, our Year 7 students participated in an incursion delivered online by the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.

Below are reflections from our students following the event.

“In English, Year 7s are studying the book Once by Morris Gleitzman. It tells the story about a child going through the Holocaust from their perspective. It showcases the point of view and struggles of a Jewish child during Adolf Hitler’s rule.

“As part of our studies, students from Melton and Cobblebank campuses attended an incursion about the Holocaust. The session covered Adolf Hitler’s background, the effect the Holocaust had on Jews, the perspective of Holocaust survivors and the emotional impacts of the decisions made by people in the Holocaust and their positive or negative outcomes.

“The session was very informative and super interesting. The presenter spoke about what happened during the Nazi’s supreme rule and the lives of different people within those times. Videos of survivors were shown, which helped the students gain a deeper insight into what occurred.

“The most captivating fact I took from the incursion was that many collaborators of the Nazi organisation risked their lives to protect and save the Jews. It was acts of selflessness that allowed many struggling children to survive up until today, to share their story. Alexa, Cobblebank Campus

“During our incursion run by the Melbourne Holocaust Museum we learned that the Holocaust was an event led by the Nazis and their leader, Adolf Hitler, during World War II that was extremely racist.

“About six million people were killed during this event, most of them Jews, but also people like gypsies, Slavs, homosexuals and the mentally disabled, all because the Nazis thought that they were inferior, which was sickening.

“We learned that Jews only made up one per cent of Germany at the time of World War II, and how Hitler saw the Aryan Race as superior to Jews because of their blonde hair and blue eyes. Which is ironic since Hitler had none of those traits. He wasn’t even German, he was Austrian!

“We also watched some interviews with survivors. We learned that life during that time was horrible for the Jews, who weren’t treated like normal people and were made to wear a ‘Yellow Star of David’ that identified them as Jewish.

“Overall, the incursion showed us just how horrible the actions and events of the Holocaust were and will help us to understand some things in our novel Once. Dominic, Melton Campus

SMILE for Wellbeing

Over the past few weeks, we have provided some practical tips to look after your wellbeing using the SMILE acronym

S: Sleep
