Sunday’s gospel from Mark 4:1-34 tells of Jesus leading his disciples across the Sea of Galilee. Despite the storm and their fear, Jesus calms the storm and teaches them about faith: “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?”
This story reminds us that while we face challenges, our faith in God carries us.
At St Francis Catholic College, we embrace this faith with a genuine delight in people and life, even amidst daily challenges.
This optimistic spirit, grounded in God's power and love, allows us to trust beyond what seems reasonable. We often encounter situations where resources are limited, yet through God's generosity, needs are met.
Whether it's finding funds, stretching food supplies, or enjoying iced coffee when there's no hot water, this “let go and let God” attitude is central to our Franciscan spirit.
This attitude has been modelled to us by St Clare and her Poor Sisters, and by Franciscan Sisters, Friars, and laity worldwide.
Their stories show deep faith and joyful resilience. Our Franciscan school aims to promote this attitude and faith among students and staff, fostering a community that finds joy and hope in the everyday absurdity, trusting in God's abundance and care.
As we end this busy school term, we focus on a Franciscan spirit of optimism and faith grounded in the joy of serving others and trusting in God's love for us.

Last week, it was my pleasure to congratulate our students who had completed the ACU Uni Step-Up Program.
Uni Step-Up allows students to experience university life by studying two first-year units while they are still in senior secondary school. There is no cost to students as ACU covers all fees.
Participation in the program allows students to get a head start at university, develop uni-level study skills, and discover more about their potential degree.
The program runs across four subject areas:
The enrolment usually takes place during Year 11 and is endorsed by the College. Most of the study is completed online, but there are intensive compulsory days on-site at ACU during the Term 2 school holidays and the Christmas school holidays (late January).
Students who complete two subjects receive an unconditional offer to enter their chosen course. If they complete one subject, they receive a conditional offer in line with the ACU guarantee program.
I congratulate all of this year’s Uni Step-Up graduates and commend them for taking up this fantastic opportunity that benefits their current and future studies.
This term has been a long 11 weeks but packed with many exciting opportunities and activities. I thank our hard-working staff who make all these possible.
I wish all our staff, students and their families a restful holiday break and look forward to Term 3.

As we end the term and Semester 1, I would like to acknowledge the work of all staff here at the College.
Whether planning engaging learning activities and assessments, supporting students in the classroom or keeping learning spaces clean and warm and with functioning IT, all contribute to providing students with the best learning environment.
Students can do their part by placing rubbish in the provided bins and keeping their bags and other items not used in class in their lockers.
As a community, it is important for everyone to take pride in our learning and activity spaces.
Our Lumination Lab is one of the newest spaces at Melton Campus, and we are beginning to use this high-tech classroom. We have a staged process to include virtual learning across both campuses over time.
If your child has changed their subjects or electives for Semester 2, all materials, stationery and text resources must be purchased before Term 3.
Booklists are available at Student Reception, or you can refer to the booklist emailed to you at the end of last year.
If a subscription to Edrolo is required, students should see their relevant subject teacher or Domain Leader to organise this.
The term break provides a great opportunity to rest and reset before the next learning phase.
For our Year 12 students, there will be holiday tasks to complete, revision to begin and study notes to organise. With just over a term to go, Year 12 students (VCE and VCE VM) should use this time wisely to stay ahead of the upcoming term.

Only five months ago, we warmly welcomed almost 200 new Year 7 students to Cobblebank Campus, effectively doubling our student and staff numbers. For the first time, we began the school year at our new campus.
The weeks and months of Semester 1 2024 have sped by, and when I sat down to reflect on the past two terms, I was amazed by how much we have participated in and achieved.
Our mission statement calls us to nurture the personal, spiritual, and academic growth of each individual and there has been a power of work by our staff to achieve this goal.
Starting secondary school is a significant milestone and our Year 7 students not only settled in with relative ease but embraced their new environment and all the opportunities on offer at our campus.
Their recent camp highlighted the bonds they have formed with each other and their teachers and was a chance to look back and see how far they had come since their first day in February. Timetables, Yondr pouches, lockers, multiple teachers and mentor groups were all foreign to our youngest students, who have grown in confidence throughout the first half of the year.
Our Year 8 students have stepped up in 2024, seizing numerous opportunities to act as role models for our Year 7s.
Their enthusiastic participation in events such as the Swimming and Athletics carnivals, our annual Project Compassion campaign, Harmony Week and Reconciliation Week activities has shown us that this cohort is energetic and resilient and will proudly lead our campus in the years ahead.
To support their faith development, Year 8 students participated in their annual Reflection Day run by Youth Mission Team, during which they enjoyed activities and thought-provoking presentations designed to empower them to make positive life choices.
All students in Anthony, Catherine, Bakhita and Glowrey celebrated house masses at St Anthony’s Church this semester, and we gathered as a campus at the end of Term 1 for a moving Stations of The Cross reflection.
Education is a partnership and we appreciate the support and involvement of all our Cobblebank families. Our House Welcome Evening was a great success and it was wonderful to celebrate Mother’s Day with all our mums and motherly figures.
Many parents and guardians also joined us on-site for Parent Student Teacher Interviews and had important conversations with teachers about their child’s learning to date and goals for the second half of the year.
Extra-curricular activities are a big part of student life at Cobblebank Campus and this semester was no exception. Students have spent hours preparing for the upcoming College Production Rock of Ages, attending weekly rehearsals at Melton Campus. They are excited to perform three shows in the first week of Term 3. Families and friends can buy their tickets here.
Our students participated in many SACCSS competitions, including junior golf, swimming championships, cross country, and junior girls' and boys' AFL gala days.
I am proud of the incredible success of our Year 7 SACCSS Premier League teams this term – six of the seven teams made it through to the semi-finals last week and both volleyball teams, along with the girls' netball team will play in grand final matches to end the term and season. We wish them the best of luck.
I hope all students have a restful break and look forward to seeing everyone back and refreshed on Tuesday 16 July for another busy term ahead.
It’s official! Construction works for Stage 2 of Cobblebank Campus have begun.
It was exciting to see temporary fencing go up and machinery start to move in this week, so watch this space for updates over the coming months.
The new creative hub will feature Food Technology and Materials Technology (wood and metal) facilities including a hospitality kitchen and dining area.
Level 2 will include spaces for Art, Visual Communication and Design, robotics, STEM and general project-based learning.

School holidays bring plenty of downtime for students and much more time for social media scrolling and online activities.
Issues such as exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying and excessive screen time are challenging, but there is help available if you need it.
The eSafety Commissioners website features a page specifically designed to help parents and guardians keep their children safe online and provides advice on how to deal with a range of issues, including violent or distressing content, abusive comments and bullying.

Students at both campuses will be dismissed at 2.30pm this Friday 28 June, the final day of Term 2.
Term 3 will begin for all students on Tuesday 16 July. Monday 15 July is a Study at Home Day and Staff Professional Learning Day.
Melton Council has advised the College that the roundabout on Bulmans Road at Sovereign Boulevard will be closed to through traffic during the school holidays between Saturday 29 June and Sunday 14 July 2024.
Left turns only will be permitted at the roundabout for traffic travelling north on Bulmans Road.
The closure is required to complete essential pavement, asphalt, kerbing, drainage and line marking work during the Term 2 school holidays when traffic volumes are typically lower.
Works will take place between 7am and 6pm Monday to Saturday. No work will take place on Sunday.
Local access will be permitted to residents in the service road on both sides of Bulmans
Road, as well as the Happy Feet Learning Centre. Traffic and pedestrian detours will be in place during this time. Please refer to the maps below.
Please take care when driving through the area, follow directions from traffic controllers, and observe all signage.
Christians Bus Co has advised that a stop has been added to the Darley-St Francis Catholic College Melton Campus bus service.
The bus will now stop at the Hallets Way/Grey St PTV stop to help with the overflow on the Underbank bus in the morning and afternoon.
New timetables for both services are available below. These changes will take effect from the first day of Term 3, Tuesday 16 July.
Melton Council will hold a free immunisation catch-up session at Melton Community Hall on Friday 5 July for students in Years 7 and 10 who missed out on their vaccinations during sessions at the College this year.

Your appointment is not secured until you receive a confirmation email. Please contact the Melton Council Immunisation Team on 9747 7200. Bookings are essential; no walk-in appointments will be available.

Last Tuesday, students from both campuses headed out to Galvin Park in Werribee to compete in the SACCSS Year 8 Boys AFL Gala Day.
It was a round-robin style event where each team played three matches against other Division 2 schools.
Unfortunately, neither team made it to the finals, but all competitors had fun learning to play AFL or refining some of their skills.
The Sports department would like to give a special shout-out to the Year 9 girls who volunteered to assist us on the day: Biannkah, Lily, Talia, Lailah, Emily and Hannah. Thank you for making it such a successful day and for the enthusiasm you brought to your roles.

This year marks Cobblebank Campus' second year in the Year 7 SACCS Premier League competition, and we are thrilled to announce that six out of seven teams made it to the semi-finals.
This remarkable achievement showcases the talent and commitment of our students and coaches.
We congratulate everyone for their hard work and dedication throughout the season.
Our Boys’ and Girls’ volleyball and Girls’ Netball teams will represent the College in the grand final matches this Thursday. We wish them the best of luck.
Well done also to our Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ AFL, and Boys’ Football teams for their outstanding seasons.
Special mention to students on the Boys’ Football team who fought valiantly and lost to a penalty shootout in the last few minutes.

Runner-up was Year 8 Bakhita student Ekamjot.

The result was not what I wanted,
as my result came out as positive.
I started to break down as I was gutted,
when I was told to quarantine by my relative.
I wrap myself in the sheets like a turtle in its shell,
while I begin succumbing to my fever.
My bedroom becomes my own jail cell,
confining me in my room feeling everything but eager.
Seven long days pass,
with my restraints almost over,
I will finally be able to touch the luscious grass,
which I have desired to do since I was a loner.
The clock strikes afternoon,
marking eight days since my confinement.
I emerge from my cocoon,
ready to see my loved one with much excitement.

I cannot seem to get it right.
I can never get it right.
Whether it's my appearance or my personality,
The way my grades are sinking downwards,
Or the way I talk too much.
But I can never seem to get it right.
I send the good mornings, how are you’s, goodnights.
But I can never seem to get it right.
I start calls, conversations, tell jokes, make plans,
But for some reason, I can never seem to get it right.
Maybe it's the way I get attached too quickly.
Or the way I cannot go an hour or two without missing you.
But for some reason, I can never get it right.
Each word I say, each plan I make, each letter I write,
It is perfectly crafted, but I do not know why I cannot seem to get it right.
So now I sit in my room, staring at my phone waiting for a reply,
Wondering how much longer it will take
Until I finally get it right.
Two more families are needed to host students from our sister school, Convitto Nazionale Paolo Diacono in northern Italy, who will visit the College from 18 July to 17 August.
The students range in age from 15 to 17, speak English and will be here to experience school and life in Australia. Families will need to transport them to and from school as they would their children.
We are also keen to hear from families who could be a backup for host families during the students’ visit.

Students from both campuses are invited to express their interest in attending the 2025 Garma Festival.
The Garma Festival is Australia’s largest Indigenous gathering. It is a four-day celebration of Yolngu life and culture held in remote northeast Arnhem Land.
Hosted by the Yothu Yindi Foundation, Garma showcases traditional miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling and is an important meeting point for the clans and families of the region.
The festival’s over-riding cultural mission is to provide a contemporary environment for expressing and presenting traditional Yolngu knowledge systems and customs and to share these practices in an authentic Yolngu setting.
