Weekly Reflection

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed on 30 July each year. Human trafficking involves recruiting, transporting, and possessing individuals through coercion or other fraudulent means to exploit them for profit.

Anyone can be a victim of this terrible act regardless of age or background, and human trafficking is present worldwide.

In 2022 the theme of this day is Use and Abuse of Technology. COVID-19 intensified the global use of technology. Criminals are using online platforms to recruit, exploit and control their victims. However, technology also provides a tool to aid law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting criminals.

Prayer

We pray for Pope Francis who describes human trafficking as a scourge and whose strong leadership calls for an end to all forms of exploitation and human trafficking. God of life, hear us. God of life hear us.

God of life hear our prayer.

We pray for civic and religious leaders, that they will speak out against human trafficking, and dedicate time, energy and resources to eradicating it. God of life hear us.

God of life hear our prayer.

We pray for the men and women trapped in bonded labour in fields, market gardens, mines and factories, that they will be respected as human beings rather than reduced to commodities and tools of production. God of life, hear us.

God of life hear our prayer.

We pray for an end to all discrimination, but especially discrimination against women and girls who are estimated to make up 80% of trafficked victims, so that all may live with dignity and respect. God of life, hear us.

God of life hear our prayer.

We pray that wealthy countries such as our own may be generous in supporting impoverished nations so that all people have a decent standard of living and escape the desperate circumstances that make them vulnerable to human trafficking. God of life, hear us.

God of life hear our prayer.

We pray that our demand for cheap goods and services will be reduced so that workers’ conditions and payment will reflect the dignity of their persons and their work. God of life, hear us

God of life hear our prayer.

From the Principal

NAIDOC Week was celebrated from 3 - 10 July during the school holidays. This week the College will host its celebrations, highlighting the 2022 NAIDOC Week theme Get Up, Stand Up and Show Up.

This theme calls for the continuation of momentum that has seen a change in the recognition and representation of First Nations people.

Getting up, standing up, and showing up can take many forms. At CRC Melton, we have continued to build on our Fire Carrier commitment through the appointment of a Project Officer Indigenous Students. It speaks to our commitment to inclusiveness and narrowing the gap between aspiration and reality for our Indigenous students.

Through state funding, we have also provided tutoring and mentoring for our Indigenous students and have made connections to several programs and support groups.

Earlier this month the Second General Assembly of the Fifth Plenary Council of Australia voted on 35 motions relating to various topics and issues.

The Plenary Council is the highest formal gathering of all local Catholic churches in Australia. It is held to discuss the future of the Catholic Church.

One of the motions considered related to Reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and was passed and confirmed as a decree of the Plenary Council.

Below is an extract of the council’s statement:

“The Fifth Plenary Council:

a. says sorry to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in and beyond the Church for the part played by the Church in the harms they have suffered;

b. commits to walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in continuing to work towards recognition, reconciliation and justice;

c. joyfully receives and accepts the recommendations contained in the NATSICC position paper Embracing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the Life of the Catholic Church;

d. endorses the Uluru Statement from the Heart and encourages engagement with processes for implementing the statement, including local, regional, and national truthtelling efforts.”

More details of this motion and others can be found at plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au

In the spirit of the Plenary Council’s motion and decree, events at the College this week (see below) will acknowledge and raise awareness of the rich and deep culture of the original owners of our great southern land.

COVID-19 update

This week I attended a Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) update regarding the increasing occurrence of COVID-19.

It is expected that numbers will continue to rise over winter and hopefully peak by the end of August.

MACS has been collating data from Victorian Catholic schools that clearly illustrated the effectiveness of mask-wearing.

On 25 February this year, masks were no longer mandated. The data demonstrated a significant spike in cases, particularly in Catholic and independent secondary schools.

Parents and guardians play an important role in supporting our efforts to reduce transmission at the College.

I urge you all to consider your role in keeping the College open. Wearing a mask indoors is a simple and cost-effective way to protect staff and students and ensure we remain on-site and offer face-to-face classes as much as possible during Term 3.

Mask wearing is not mandated but highly recommended and is one of the many steps the College will be promoting to reduce transmission of COVID-19, seasonal flu and other viruses.

From the Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing

Respect between individuals is crucial for fulfilling and positive relationships and for our students to enjoy meaningful and spiritually enriched lives.

It is essential to develop the skills of being respectful, to nurture and guide our students early in their lives so they understand the expected behaviour and can regulate their emotions and reactions in various situations.

We can all spark a powerful change - Let’s bring up respect.

Disrespect and violence against women and children is a serious issue in Australia and as adults, we all have a role to play in breaking this cycle. We know that while disrespect doesn’t always end in violence, violence always starts with disrespect.

That is why Catholic Regional College Melton is proud to support the Australian Government’s Stop it at the Start campaign, to help create a future free from violence for women and children.

The campaign highlights how as mums and dads, family members, teachers, coaches, employers and role models, we all play a role in nurturing and bringing up a generation of respectful young people.

We are calling on you to help us support this cause by having open and honest conversations about respect with the young people in your lives.

When we have conversations about respect, we understand disrespect. When we talk together, we change together, and that change ripples far and wide.

Here at Catholic Regional College Melton, we encourage you to spark conversations about respect early and often. This might be in the car, over dinner, or when you are returning home from a sporting match or evening out.

Even a small conversation can make a difference. There are many practical resources to help you talk about respect, including:

Conversation Guide

Advice about how to confidently and openly talk with young people about the importance of respectful relationships.

Year 9 Outdoor Education

Our Year 9 Outdoor education students had a jam-packed Semester 1 with five days spent in various outdoor environments, participating in several recreational activities.

Our first stop was an introductory mountain bike session at the You Yangs Regional Park. Students were guided through the ins and outs of using a mountain bike before exploring the plantation trails. Several students learnt a valuable lesson about dressing appropriately for the expected weather conditions as rain fell heavily and on cue when we started riding.

On our second trip we returned to the You Yangs Regional Park for a rock climbing session led by Geelong Adventure Specialists. Many of our students were not entirely comfortable with this activity. Still, they showed a great deal of resilience and with some encouragement from all involved, every student got onto the wall and climbed.

This is my favourite of all the activities we do as I witness huge growth in students’ mindsets during the day.

Our last three days of activities took place in and around Lorne in the Great Otway National Park.

On our first trip to the park, students participated in a 10km bushwalk, visiting fantastic geological formations and several waterfalls. On this walk, we experienced Victoria’s abundant environments and were astonished to witness the dramatic change in plant types when we entered a geological feature known as the “Canyon”.

Our second trip to the area saw students participate in a climbing session at Trees Adventure in Yeodene.

The aim was to build our students’ ability to overcome obstacles and promote a positive mindset by challenging them to complete courses of varying difficulty. The highest was 25 metres among the trees and the only way off was to jump down from a platform on a self-belaying device. Scary stuff!

We then moved onto the small town of Forrest and completed three hours of mountain biking, this time on more challenging trails. Again, as if on cue, the rain poured the minute we got onto our bikes. To their credit, the students got on their bikes and rode in the mud. I am sure some had a competition to see who could get the dirtiest.

Our final day involved a more relaxing surfing activity at Torquay main beach guided by Go Ride a Wave. This introduction to the marine environment allowed students to develop a more spiritual connection to the outdoors. Even though it was cold, students did not hesitate to get into the water and practice their new skills on a surfboard.

I hope all students enjoyed learning about our environment and the various recreational activities we can enjoy in the great outdoors.

Senior Italian Studies

This week in our senior Italian classes, we explored the value of learning a language and specifically, Italian culture.

We also recognised each student’s diverse culture and acknowledged how proud we are of our background. Studying a language opens so many doors and being bilingual is undoubtedly, beneficial in all facets of life.

I encourage our Year 9, 10 and 11 students who attended last week’s Subject Expo to consider incorporating Italian studies in their senior pathways. Pictured above and below is the colourful display created by the Languages Domain. We hope the information provided by students and teachers on the day provided an insight to the many advantages of being bilingual.

Italian Day

On Thursday our Year 7 and 8 students will celebrate all things Italian with fun activities in all their classes, a pizza lunch and special visit from a gelati van. Along with competitions and a screening of Anh Do Does Italy Part 1, students will watch a live performance of Pinnochio in the Performing Arts Centre. There will also be a special exhibit of Italian souvenirs in the library at lunchtime.

RSPCA Excursion

Yesterday a group of our VCAL students visited the RSPCA Education Centre as part of their Unit 1 Personal Development Skills course.

They attended a seminar to learn about the role of the RSPCA in dealing with animal welfare issues and visited the farm and adoption centre to meet some very special animals.

The next step for this group of students will be to act as advocates for the RSPCA and spread awareness about some common animal welfare issues

Animals have rights too, and it’s important that we are all aware of how we can uphold them.

What you can do

  • Report any suspected animal neglect, cruelty, or even stray animals to the RSPCA on (03) 9224 2222.
  • Only buy animal products that meet the RSPCA approval (such as free-range eggs, chicken and pork products).
  • Become an animal fosterer to help animals get adopted.
  • Adopt an animal from the RSPCA adoption program.
  • Donate to the RSPCA (they don’t just need money; blankets, newspapers, animal toys and food are just as important).
  • Become an RSPCA volunteer.

Police Blitz in School Zones

Melton Police, together with Melton Highway Patrol, will target driver behaviour in and around school crossings and school zones.

The operation will also see the activation of Community Safety Officers from Melton City Council.

Police would like to remind all drivers that the bottom line is safety. School zones are areas designated as high risk at certain times of the day and the crossing supervisor is there to ensure the roads are safely crossed by all pedestrians. The laws are in place to protect everyone.
