This week we are blessed to celebrate two important occasions. This Thursday is R U OK? Day and the celebration of our patron St Francis. Both events share a common thread - a call to care for one another and to live lives filled with compassion, empathy, and love.
R U OK? Day invites us to reach out to those around us with a simple question that has the power to make a difference: Are you okay? It reminds us of the importance of checking in with each other, especially in times of struggle or uncertainty.
This aligns with the life and mission of St Francis, whose we celebrate on Thursday. St Francis spent his life caring for the marginalised, the forgotten, and all of God's creation, always reaching out with a heart full of love and humility.
As a Franciscan school, our approach to R U OK? Day is deeply inspired by the life and teachings of St Francis. He not only had a deep connection to all living beings but also a profound sensitivity to the emotional and spiritual needs of others. His life teaches us to approach those around us with gentleness, empathy, and a spirit of service, seeing the face of Christ in everyone.
St Francis was known for his ability to listen, not just with his ears but with his heart. In a time when so many people feel isolated or burdened by their struggles, we are called to be present to one another in the same way St Francis was. Whether it’s a classmate, co-worker, friend, or family member, asking if they are ok can be the first step in offering someone the gift of being truly heard.
So we pray:
Lord, make us instruments of Your peace.
When others are struggling,
Help us to be present,
To listen with compassion,
And to offer them support.
May we live in the spirit of St Francis,
Caring for all of God’s creation
And each other,
With love, humility, and grace.
Amen.

In last Sunday’s second reading, St James warns the early Christian community to whom he is speaking of the danger of judging a person by what they wear or how rich they may appear in their fine clothes and jewellery
This gospel message holds true even today.
At St Francis Catholic College, we offer a wide range of pathways to post-secondary employment or study. Each has its unique strengths and is suited to the wide variations found among our students.
Regardless of how a student manages to complete their studies at the College, all are viable and worthwhile pursuits that we hope lead to a secure and fulfilling future.
Last Friday, I was invited by the students to the VCE VM Show and Tell, where they displayed their completed projects.
The buzz and excitement were wonderful as students explained their project and how it had been developed. An additional bonus was that the College received a major upgrade in the vegetable garden, and local community groups benefitted from various donated and renovated items.
Thank you to our teaching staff, who are creative and flexible in encouraging students to achieve their competencies through such a wide variety of innovative expressions.
Students undertaking the VCE VM complete a two-year applied learning program that is part of the VCE. Students gain skills that prepare them for work and life.
Teachers assess student progress through engaging, hands-on activities such as their Makers Market held in May and last Friday's Show and Tell.
The only exam is the General Achievement Test (GAT).
The VCE VM is an appropriate choice if students prefer to learn in a real-world environment and don’t require an ATAR.
The VCE VM helps students prepare for:
Not every student will see university study and an ATAR as their pathway to a meaningful career. These alternative pathways to the post-secondary school workforce are constructive and set our students up for future success.

Despite the wild and windy weather, our Melton Campus Junior Hub continues to take shape.
Below are some of the latest photos from our site visit last week.
Congratulations to our Pasifika Engagement Project Officer Kimiora Joyce and Year 12 student Joanna on their recent nominations for a Melton City Council Community Achievement Award.
The awards are for Melton residents who inspire individual and community pride and help make the city a better place to live, whether through their work as individuals, volunteers or by clearly exceeding the normal requirements of their paid work.
Award recipients and nominees were acknowledged at a special event hosted by Melton Council at Witchmount Winery last Tuesday.
A role model and inspiration to young people at SFCC and among the wider Melton community, Kimiora was nominated for the 2025 Intercultural Engagement Leader of the Year.
Kimiora has improved community access for students by promoting initiatives such as the African Youth Initiative and AYI Girls Chat, and coordinated intercultural events that normalise the celebration of diversity.
A leader and spokesperson for the Pasifika community, Kimiora is the coordinator of the Mãori Children Culture Group and was involved in Melton Council’s COVID-19 vaccination video, representing the Màori community. She has also been involved in the College's Pasifika, Punjabi, Burmese, Congolese, and Ethiopian dance groups and fosters cross-cultural conversations during intercultural days.
Through her work as an educator, community organiser and advocate, Kimiora embodies the idea that cultural diversity is not just something to be tolerated but embraced and enriches the fabric of the diverse Melton community.
A 2025 Young Citizen of the Year nominee, Year 12 student Joanna is an active, creative, vibrant and engaged participant of the Dancing Stars Group – a free, open dance class for the local community.
Joanna supports and empowers other participants by teaching choreography. She is also a youth group leader at her local church and volunteers with projection, pulpit stars, marketing and media, transportation, scheduling, and planning of youth group activities. She also encourages involvement in the church and helps facilitate a space where new friendships can be formed.
Kimiora and Joanna received a Community Achievement Award to recognise their work and nominations.
Year 12 student Giselle’s VCE VM studies extend well beyond the classroom.
For the past two years, Giselle has volunteered every Sunday at The Earth Village Community in Melton.
Earth Village includes a second-hand clothing store, provides food relief (including free bread, baked goods, hygiene products, nappies, and baby food), and serves free takeaway meals daily to those in need. On average, they distribute around 100 walk-in takeaway meals each day.
Additionally, they offer valuable work experience opportunities for volunteers.
This week, Giselle shares her story about her efforts to make a positive impact within the local community.
In Unit 4 of our Personal Development Skills studies, we have been working on projects to raise awareness and support for the homeless.
Every Sunday, I go to The Earth Village in Melton to volunteer my time and give back to the community. I have been volunteering there for the last 2 years.
The op shop sells good-quality, recycled clothing, and the money raised provides food relief to those in need in our local Melton community.
Volunteering my time every Sunday is something I find rewarding, and it gives me a chance to see our regular customers and catch up with my coworkers.
I encourage you to visit Earth Village’s website, where you can learn more about their services and how you might be able to help.
The Earth Village Op Shop, 12 Wallace Square, Melton, is open from 9.30am – 5pm on weekdays and 10am - 4pm weekends.
Nine of our Year 10 students have had the opportunity to travel to the Australian Government Apprenticeships (AGA) training centre in Deer Park each Friday to participate in hands-on trade training experiences.
The students are exploring various trade fields and completing Certificate II units in courses including Building and Construction, Plumbing, Automotive, and Electrotechnology.
This immersive experience has provided invaluable opportunities for the students to gain practical skills that are transferable across various trades.
By sampling different industries, the students are not only learning technical skills but also gaining insight into potential career paths and what working in these industries might entail.
So far, the students have excelled in this dynamic environment and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This exposure to real-world trades has left them eager to continue exploring future career options.
