Weekly Reflection

This is our last newsletter for Term 3 and I feel blessed to have served our school community as Acting Director of Catholic Identity for this short time in Shaun Coates’ absence.

Sometimes a week goes by, then another again, and it can feel like not much is happening. We may even find ourselves saying, “same old thing on the news again”.

However, this week was very different. There was no familiarity, for it was the week we lost our Queen. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022, the birthday of Mary the Queen of Heaven and Earth.

We will be granted a national public holiday in honour of Her Majesty’s life and service on 22 September 2022, another Marian feast day, that of Our Lady Queen of Peace.

The rise of His Majesty, King Charles III comes only at a loss, the loss of our Queen, a steady, strong and constant leader.

This is a striking reminder that every life on this earth will end. We are not made for this world but the next. May we live with a spirit of preparedness for this ultimate reality.

May the last week of Term 3 and the spring holidays that flow after it bring peace, blessings and new life. May God’s Spirit fill us with His calm so we may enter this time and find refreshment and renewal.

I end below with a prayer for Her Majesty; may she rest in peace.

Prayer

Almighty God,

You are the author and sustainer of all human life;

grant that your servant, Elizabeth our Queen,

whom you granted a long and happy reign as monarch of these lands,

may be forgiven her sins and rewarded with that eternal life

promised to all those born again in the water of baptism and power of your Spirit.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, forever and ever,

Amen.

Andrew Sciberras

Acting Director of Catholic Identity

From the Principal

Regardless of one’s political views, we can not help but admire Queen Elizabeth. Her years of service and unwavering dedication to her role as monarch are inspiring examples of servant leadership.

We keep in our prayers her family, who are now left to mourn her loss and adjust to life under King Charles.

Term 3 has flown by so quickly, and once again, it has been wonderful to be on-site.

It has been a busy term with many activities; on Celebration Day our 1200 students gathered in reverence to celebrate the Eucharist. We have competed in Premier League, attended the SACCSS Athletics carnival and taken students into Melbourne to see Harry Potter, just to name a few of the marvellous opportunities offered.

As we emerge from winter into the warmth of spring, I wish our families a relaxing and safe school holiday.

Finally, a huge thank you to our Parents and Friends group, who provided the funds for a new table tennis table. It is already popular with students bringing their bats to play at recess and lunch.

Re-enrolment 2023

The College is planning classes and staffing for 2023.

A reminder that families are required to email enrolments@sfcc.vic.edu.au if their child/children will not return to the College in 2023.

Exit paperwork will be emailed to families by the end of October.

Students will not be formally exited from the College until all relevant paperwork is returned.

From the Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing

As Term 3 draws to a close, there are many highlights from the events and activities our students have enjoyed both in and outside the classroom.

It has been wonderful to see the many sporting teams participating in Premier League, NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Italian Day incursion, Batyr presentations, art excursions, our Write a Book in a Day event, Winter Sleepout, and the Mathematics competition, among many others.

These opportunities help students develop their sense of belonging and friendships with others.

Each individual is encouraged to strive to develop skills beyond their comfort zone and push themselves to achieve what they didn’t feel possible. Term 4 will present more opportunities for our students to develop their skills in the classroom and in extracurricular activities.

Term 4 uniform

A reminder that when students return for Term 4, they have the option of wearing their summer or winter uniform up until Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 1 November, after which the summer uniform is compulsory.

Please take time during the holidays to ensure your child’s uniform is prepared and ready for the change from winter to summer.

NAPLAN results for students in years 7 and 9 were sent out by mail last week.

NAPLAN Certificates of Achievement are awarded to students in Year 9 who have achieved excellence by receiving a result in the top band (Band 10) for Reading or Numeracy or both.

The certificates celebrate students who achieve the highest level irrespective of where they start. We are happy to acknowledge that nine Year 9 students received this award and congratulate them on their achievement.

Due to the cancellation of NAPLAN in 2020, Certificates of Achievement that show significant improvement and growth from Year 7 to 9 cannot be issued.

However, as you will know, many students across years 7 to 11 have received Certificates of Academic Excellence from the College for achieving an average of 85% or above in individual subject areas in Semester 1.

I would like to recognise all students working to the best of their ability. To quote Fr Moody’s homily at our Celebration Day mass, these students are “ soaring like the eagles in the reflection”.

General Achievement Test (GAT)

On Wednesday last week, 176 Unit 3/4 and VCAL senior students sat the GAT in the Stadium.

The new format tested students in both cohorts in literacy and numeracy. The Unit 3/4 students were then assessed on a range of knowledge across disciplines. The students conducted themselves maturely and responsibly.

Unit 3/4 students will begin practice exams during the second week of the upcoming school holidays.

Project-Based Learning

Our Year 9 students have been immersed in Project-Based Learning (PBL) across Humanities, Science and English.

PBL provides opportunities to explore big picture thinking, engage in real-world issues, work collaboratively in teams and be solution-focused.

While talking to a Year 10 student recently, they commented on how much they enjoyed their PBL units despite being in distance learning mode in 2021. Is your child in Year 9? If so, ask them about the current PBL unit they are doing.

An Evening of Music

Our 2022 Annual College Music and Awards Evening was held in the Performing Arts Centre last Thursday and we congratulate all our musicians and vocalists on their fantastic performances.

The evening featured solo musical performances and showcased the Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Vocal Ensemble.

Music students from Year 7 to 10 and our VCE VET Music students who have displayed excellence throughout the semester also performed.

Our thanks to the families who joined us to celebrate the efforts of our talented students.

Health and PE Week

Last week the College community celebrated Health and PE Week.

This year’s theme was Good for Children, Good for Schools, Good for Communities and staff and students certainly enjoyed the opportunity to get their heart rate going and show their competitive spirit!

Our activities aimed to raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity. Each day, students in homeroom completed a quiz on a range of topics including healthy eating, nutrition, sleep, CRC sports history, Australian sport and the benefits of exercise.

Some of our brave students also took on the Physical Activity Challenge, completing 150 push-ups, a 100-point challenge and more! Congratulations to Year 8 student, Samantha De Guzman, who was the overall winner.

The Bike ‘n’ Blend stall was a massive hit with students working hard to make their own smoothies. In addition to the hard work and refreshing reward, we raised $102 for Fair Game, an organisation that provides health and fitness programs for disadvantaged, remote communities.

On Thursday we had a cycling class and workout led by our HPE staff with students getting their heart rate up and enjoying a Deck of Cards Challenge to test stamina and skill.

The week ended with a footy scarf day and a netball match between our Year 12 students and staff. The staff did well to keep up with the more agile legs of the students, and a super goal from our Sports Assistant Ella Higgins sealed the win.

Well done to all staff and students who immersed themselves in the HPE Week activities. A massive thank you to the HPE team for their dedication, time and passion throughout the week.

Keep moving!

Premiers Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge encourages students to read a set number of books over the year and record their efforts online.

Since the Challenge first began in 2005, more than 3.5 million students have read more than 54 million books.

This year the Challenge was open to all our Year 7 classes and any other students who wished to register.

A total of 239 books were read and seven students completed the Challenge. These students will receive a book from the Alexandria Resource Centre as a reward for their efforts. This year’s winners are:

Senior Boys Basketball

Last Tuesday, our senior boys’ basketball team notched up a convincing win against Kolbe Catholic College. Despite their spectacular come back from a forfeited game the week before, the team finished third on the SACCSS ladder and did not make the finals.

The boys brought more than their A game, stepped up and defeated Kolbe 90 to 42. We are so proud of the students and special thanks to Flynn Petitt for his sideline help and showing us his superstar skills in the friendly we played.

I have to mention my MVPs on and off the court, Jok Job and Li Min Kung. Both showed great leadership and displayed the true spirit of our CRC Melton community.

Seasons for Growth Program

Learning to live with change and loss

Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Catholic Regional College Melton we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively.

To help our students with this, we are offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will begin in the first week of Term 4 for Year 7 to 9 students.

The program will be offered to students in Years 10 to 12 in 2023.

Seasons for Growth is facilitated in small groups and based on research that highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss.

It focuses on self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks.

If you think your child would benefit from the program, we encourage you to talk to them about participating.

The College is pleased to offer this important program and confident it will be a valuable learning experience for all involved.

If you would like further information, please contact your child’s Year Level Coordinator.
