Weekly Reflection

St Francis of Assisi Feast Day

Today, 4 October, is a special day for our College as it celebrates our new school patron, St Francis.

Two Year 7 classes took part in a special celebratory mass led by Fr Fabian.

The recent introduction of daylight savings means we can enjoy longer hours of warmth and sunshine after our work and study day concludes - much like St Francis praised in his canticle to the sun and moon.

Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord, All praise is Yours, all glory, all honour and all blessings.

To you alone, Most High, do they belong, and no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures,
especially Sir Brother Sun,
Who is the day through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour,
Of You Most High, he bears the likeness.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
In the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air,
And fair and stormy, all weather's moods,
by which You cherish all that You have made.

Praised be You my Lord through Sister Water,
So useful, humble, precious and pure.

Praised be You my Lord through Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.

Praised be You my Lord through our Sister,
Mother Earth
who sustains and governs us,
producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs.
Praise be You my Lord through those who grant pardon for love of You and bear sickness and trial.

Blessed are those who endure in peace, By You Most High, they will be crowned.

Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death,
from whom no-one living can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will.

No second death can do them harm. Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks,
And serve Him with great humility.

From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 4 - I hope all students and their families had a restful holiday.

On the middle Sunday of the holidays, the Church celebrated World Day of Migrants and Refugees. This awareness raising commenced in 1914 and allows us to pray for those who are dispossessed and to consider our response to refugees. In his 2022 address, Pope Francis speaks of the value that each refugee brings to our society:

Building the future with migrants and refugees also means recognising and valuing how much each of them can contribute to the process of construction.”

This is a beautiful way to consider why we should be inclusive in our community – because each person brings gifts and talents that make our community rich and diverse.

With the images on our screens of Russians escaping across the border or Ukrainians fleeing their war-torn homes, we can be overcome with sadness. Again our Pope encourages us not to lose hope:

Yet this does not mean that we should lose heart. In the light of what we have learned in the tribulations of recent times, we are called to renew our commitment to building a future that conforms ever more fully to God’s plan of a world in which everyone can live in peace and dignity.”

Pope Francis makes it very clear to us that all should be included and welcomed in our community

No one must be excluded. God’s plan is essentially inclusive and gives priority to those living on the existential peripheries. Among them are many migrants and refugees, displaced persons, and victims of trafficking. The Kingdom of God is to be built with them, for without them it would not be the Kingdom that God wants.”

Let us all pray that Term 4 will be an opportunity to demonstrate inclusion and harmony so that all students and staff enjoy a safe and peaceful environment in which to learn.

Prayer

Lord, make us bearers of hope, so that where there is darkness, your light may shine, and where there is discouragement, confidence in the future may be reborn.

Lord, make us instruments of your justice, so that where there is exclusion, fraternity may flourish, and where there is greed, a spirit of sharing may grow.

Lord, make us builders of your Kingdom, together with migrants and refugees and with all who dwell on the peripheries.

Lord, let us learn how beautiful it is to live together as brothers and sisters.

Amen.

From the Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing

I hope families had an enjoyable break and time to relax and prepare for our final term of 2022.

I have encouraged students to think about the goals they hope to achieve by the end of the year and strive to do their best in all their subjects.

Annual Art Exhibition Returns

We are excited to invite families to our annual VCE Folio Exhibition, which opens in our Performing Arts Centre on Thursday 20 October.

The exhibition makes a welcome return after being presented online for two years due to COVID restrictions.

Finally, parents, guardians and friends will be able to walk through our exhibition and appreciate the talents of our senior students. The work has been produced to meet the VCE study design requirements for the subjects of Media Studies, Studio Art and Visual Communication Design.

To make the night even more interesting, we will combine the VCE Folio Exhibition with our annual Junior Art Exhibition, which has also been sidelined for the last two years.

Student work from 2020, 2021 and 2022 will be on display. All work was produced during Art and Visual Communication Design classes and lunchtime art clubs and drawing classes.

The exhibition can be viewed from 9am to 3pm on Thursday 20 October followed by an opening night celebration from 6.30pm. Awards will be presented at 7pm. Visitors are also welcome to view the exhibition on Friday 21 October between 9am and midday.

Armed Forces Visual Story - History Month

Has one of your family members served in the armed forces or is currently doing so, either in Australia or internationally?

We would like to create an Armed Forces Visual Story to display the diverse history of our community.

If you would like to contribute a portrait of a family member who has served or a picture of a significant item with a short blurb of their story, please email me ahughes@sfcc.vic.edu.au

All contributions will be displayed in late October in the College reception.

Year 9 student Zidane provided this story about his Great Great Uncle.

And our VCE Coordinator Carissa Lock shared this story about her sister.

Year 9 Italian Pizza Lunch

As part of our unit on reading and writing invitations, Year 9 Italian students invited each other to a pizza lunch and afternoon get-together in the last week of Term 3.

Students enjoyed their Margherita pizza, originally named after Queen Margherita. Other popular pizzas were marinara and vegetarian. It was a wonderful way to end the term prior to the school holiday break.
