Weekly Reflection

On Thursday, we will have the joy of witnessing several students from both campuses take the next steps in their faith journeys through the Sacraments of Initiation at St Anthony’s Parish in Melton South.

Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist are foundational sacraments that invite each person into a closer relationship with Jesus, marking pivotal moments of God’s love and commitment in their lives.

In our Franciscan tradition, we are reminded of St Francis' deep love for simplicity, humility, and community.

Just as Francis dedicated his life to serving others and living out the teachings of Christ, these sacraments are invitations for our students to embody these same values.

Through Baptism, they are welcomed into our Catholic family, embraced by God’s love and the support of our faith community. In Confirmation, they are strengthened by the Holy Spirit, just as Francis was moved by the Spirit to proclaim peace and hope.

The Eucharist, a profound act of communion with Christ, calls them to live in unity with others, reflecting the hospitality and compassion that Francis demonstrated so beautifully.

As our students prepare to receive these sacraments, let us hold them in prayer and thanksgiving. May this experience deepen their faith, strengthen their purpose, and inspire them to live out the Franciscan values of peace, love, and service in all they do.

We are blessed to accompany them on this journey and grateful for the vibrant witness of their faith in our community.

From the Principal

This week, I attended the St Catherine of Siena Primary School Art Show with some of our Year 9 students.

As we walked through, we were blown away by the quality and range of works on display by students from Prep to Year 6.

We viewed Japanese printmaking, still-life drawings using the school’s fish tank as a prompt, and some outstanding portraiture.

There were some excellent three-dimensional pieces created around the theme of the environment and incredible Catholic iconography produced by Year 6 students.

Congratulations to the teachers for the way they have encouraged and mentored the artistic talent in these students.

We look forward to welcoming these talented budding artists to St Francis Catholic College in the future.

Cobblebank Campus Stage 1 Official Opening and Blessing

On Friday 1 November, we officially opened and blessed Stage 1 of the Cobblebank Campus.

It was a pleasure to welcome distinguished guests, including Bishop Martin Ashe, who conducted the blessing with our parish priest, Fr Alex Clemente and the Member for Melton Steve McGhie, who unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of our second Year 7-12 campus.

Our College Ensemble sang like angels, and the behaviour and reverence of our Year 8 students in attendance were exemplary.

This event marked a significant milestone in our journey as a community of faith and learning. The vision has been years in the making, commencing with the purchase of the land package back in 2018 by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (formerly Catholic Education Melbourne).

In 2020, a working party, including the Principal of Catholic Regional College Caroline Springs Jamie Madigan and myself, was established to work on the master plan for the College.

On 10 November 2021, we celebrated the Groundbreaking Ceremony in very wet and windy conditions, and our Stage 1 building commenced.

Along the way, there have indeed been many hurdles to overcome.

Through these challenges, however, we developed resilience, creativity and a positive growth mindset as we navigated each of the delays that arose.

The flexibility and collaborative approach we developed during the build have set us in good stead for our future building plans.

I thank the State Government for the $5 million contribution to Stage 1 of Cobblebank Campus and the Catholic Development Fund for the loan that enabled us to construct our first two buildings.

Stage 2 is now on the way and tenders for Stage 3 will go out in the near future.

Remembrance Day

Yesterday, we commemorated Remembrance Day.

Each year, students and staff gather on each campus to remember those who fought so Australia could be a free and democratic country.

We come together to honour and remember the countless men and women who have served in the armed forces, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, safety, and peace.

It is a day for reflection, gratitude, and, most of all, remembrance. It does not glorify war but instead reminds us of the futility and loss of life that conflict inflicts.

We recall the experience of St Francis, who experienced war himself and was profoundly moved to change his life in a most significant way.

After experiencing battle and being captured St Francis was determined to live a life of peace and service to others. The song Make Me a Channel of Your Peace, attributed to him, asks us to be a channel of God's peace.

These words of St Francis remind us that true courage often means placing the wellbeing of others above our own.

Many of those we remembered yesterday did precisely that – they answered a call greater than themselves, showing love for their fellow citizens and hope for a peaceful world.

Remembrance Day is also a time to renew our commitment to peace.

War and conflict come with an unimaginable cost, and those who served knew that cost too well. They fought not because they wanted to but because they believed in a better future for all.

We, too, can contribute to that better future – not on battlefields, but in our everyday lives through our actions, words, and choices. Let us work for peace within our families, in our schools, and in our communities.

Exams and Timed Assessment Tasks

All year levels have shown excellent behaviour in their respective examination and testing spaces in the past few weeks.

Our VCAA exam supervisors commented on the exemplary behaviour of the Unit 3/4 students undertaking their external examinations.

The Year 7 and 8 students completed Timed Assessment Tasks (TATs) while Year 9 students sat exams in English and Mathematics.

Year 10 and 11 students began their examinations last week and will finish on Thursday.

Much preparation goes into providing a calm, positive and predictable exam environment and each opportunity to sit an exam prepares our VCE students for their final VCAA examinations.

Congratulations to the students, our VCE Coordinator, Carissa Lock, Middle Years Curriculum Leader, Victoria Kamcev-Nicdao, Director of Learning and Teaching, Lucy Cassar, House Leaders and the team of teachers who prepare students for each of these formal assessments.

Jumpstart

Friday is a student-free day to allow teachers time to mark examinations, begin reports and finalise their Jumpstart preparation.

Jumpstart for Years 8-12 2025 begins on Monday 18 November to give students a taste of next year’s subjects and electives.

An email was sent to all families and students last week outlining the Jumpstart Program.

Our VCE-VM and VPC students will undertake a range of micro-credentials as part of their Jumpstart Program.

The final day for all current Year 7-11 students is Friday 29 November.

Awards Ceremony

All awards for students in Years 7-11 will be presented at ceremonies on Friday, 29 November.

Full College academic uniform must be worn on this day.

Families of award recipients will receive an invitation to the presentation next week.

VCAA results are released on Thursday 12 December, and the academic achievements of our Year 12 and Unit 3/4 2024 students will be recognised in Term 1 2025. This will include acknowledgement of the 2024 College Dux.

Booklists and 2025 classes

Students have received notice of their classes for 2025. Booklists will be sent out this week.

Information on purchasing Edrolo, a senior book-listed resource for some classes, will also be sent this week.

Students will have access to Edrolo for Jumpstart before the deadline for purchasing this resource.

It has been another very busy term as 2024 classes end, and we look towards 2025.

Medication for Seasonal Allergies

We have experienced an increase in the number of students affected by seasonal allergies such as hay fever in the past few weeks.

Hay fever is caused by the nose and/or eyes coming into contact with environmental allergens, such as pollens (grasses, weeds or trees).

These allergens are generally associated with spring when airborne grass pollens are at their peak. An allergic response causes itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and other similar symptoms.

All parents and guardians are reminded to assess the weather conditions and take any precautionary measures to help their children avoid the effects of seasonal allergies, especially if they are prone to such allergies.

Please remember that if your child requires medication at school (including over-the-counter medication such as Panadol or antihistamines), you must complete a Medication Authority Form, available below.

SFCC Medication Authority Form v4 0 2024

For further information about the processes for administering medications at school or during school-related activities, please refer to our Administration of Medication Policy.

Ancient History Excursion

In the last week of Term 3, Ancient History students visited the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne to further their knowledge of the world of ancient Greece and Rome.

During their tour, they saw age-old artefacts and deepened their understanding of the Greek city-states, the structure of society, their military equipment and their impact, which is still felt today.

By the end of the tour the students split into two groups to debate whether ancient Greece or Rome was better.

Students used the experience to refine their knowledge and prepare for their final exam.

Students Meet Indigenous Artist

During terms 2 to 4, Year 9 students Lily and Ruby have attended the Western Bulldogs Nallei Jerring Leadership Program.

The program includes practical and theory-based activities designed to enhance cultural knowledge, leadership, teamwork, resilience, communication, support networks, and connection to community among young Indigenous people.

Last month, Lily and Ruby attended an art workshop run by Indigenous artist Merindah Gunya (Bayley).

Bayley was born and raised in Warrnambool, Victoria, where she started painting from a young age and learned from her Elders about traditional storytelling through painting. She currently lives on Bunurong country in Melbourne.

During the workshop, Bayley shared her story as someone who pursued an arts pathway and taught the Indigenous students how to represent family, brother, and sister totems.

Lily and Ruby then had the opportunity to create a canvas to share their story.

SACCSS Junior Hockey

On Friday 1 November, our Melton Campus junior hockey team travelled to Footscray Hockey Club to compete in the SACCSS Junior Hockey Tournament.

The team had a successful day, securing three wins and putting them into the grand final!

After two consecutive years as premiers, our team reached the grand final and, in a tightly contested match, finished with a 0-1 loss.

A special thank you to our student coaches, Jonah and Alfie, for their guidance and encouragement throughout the day, which played a significant role in the team’s journey.

A big shout-out to our dedicated players for maintaining a competitive edge throughout the day and getting into the grand final – it was no small task!

Thank you to everyone for giving it your all and making the most of the day by having fun and displaying excellent hockey skills.
