Recently I was introduced the story of John Dirimera and Francis Conaci, two Aboriginal boys taken to Rome in 1849 by a Benedictine abbot to train as missionaries so they could evangelise to their own people.
Their abilities challenged racist assumptions, and they received personal blessings from Pope Pius IX.
Though successful in their studies, both struggled with homesickness and the harsh European climate; Conaci ultimately died in Rome and was buried at St Paul’s Outside the Walls.
Dirimera returned to Australia two years later, only to die soon after. These boys’ short lives remain a testament to faith, resilience, and the deep longing for home.
This story highlights the deep connection to country held by First Nations people.
It is this connection that has been reflected in the historic statewide treaty signed by the Victorian government last week.
This law establishes a First Peoples Assembly that must be consulted on laws affecting Indigenous communities.
The treaty also commits to ongoing truth-telling about the impacts of colonisation and creates a government arm responsible for closing the gap, aiming to strengthen the relationship between First Nations people and the state.
The purpose is to forge a renewed and enduring relationship built on respect, trust, accountability and integrity, something that as Christians we should all be striving achieve.
So, as we reflect this week on the relationship between First Nations people and all Australians, let us think about how we can demonstrate true respect for others, particularly those whose histories and experiences differ from our own.
How might we contribute to building fairer, stronger communities in which every Victorian has the opportunity to flourish?

Each year, parents and guardians, staff and students complete the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic (MACS) Schools Survey.
Comparisons over time provide a snapshot of how students feel about their experience at the College.
We recently received our 2025 student survey results, offering valuable insight into how our learners experience school life at St Francis Catholic College.
The data highlights both areas of growth and areas requiring continued focus as we work together to strengthen student wellbeing, learning, and belonging.
Our school’s results also closely mirror trends across all MACS schools (see below).

Several areas reflect steady or improving student experiences.
These insights will guide our leadership team, teaching staff, and community as we refine strategies to support every learner.
We thank the students who took the time to share their experiences. Your voice matters deeply and will continue to shape our direction forward.
I encourage all parents and guardians to complete this survey in 2026, as limited participation over the past few years has led to a lack of credible data on parents' and guardians' attitudes to school.

As students commence their Jumpstart Program, it is an excellent time to reflect on what has been completed in 2025 and set goals for 2026.
At the end of next week, we will celebrate student achievements during presentations at both campuses:
2025 Cobblebank Campus Year 7-9 Academic Awards – Thursday 27 November
2025 Melton Campus Year 7-11 Academic Awards – Friday 28 November
Families will be notified and invited to attend the award ceremonies if their child is a recipient.
We have been advised that new power poles and lines will be installed along Ferris Road, between High Street and Bridge Road, and on the Western Freeway outbound entry and exit ramps.
These works are scheduled to take place between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday from Tuesday 11 November until early December 2025.
There will also be five overnight closures between 8pm and 5am on the Western Freeway outbound entry and exit ramps. We have not been advised when these will occur however, detours will be in place.

A celebratory display of work by Design Technology - Wood students was on show at our College Art Exhibition last month.
For the first time, Year 10 students completed a full-year course, enabling them to undertake more complex work and 'accessorise' their projects with additional functional design initiatives and moving parts, such as drawers.
In his first full year at SFCC, teacher Sandeep Lal has done amazing things with his students, operating out of the smaller workshop. Sandeep’s two Year 10, one-semester groups built their tables in record time.
A special thanks to our machinist/assistant, Brendan Howden, who works tirelessly to support the students and prepare their materials to 'millimetre-perfect' tolerances.
It is encouraging to see the increasing diversity of students' work and the standard becoming more polished each year. Our younger students are inspired by this and not only attempt to emulate it but aim to surpass it.
We look forward to 2026 to see how much further the bar is raised.
Thank you to our Arts Domain staff for including our students’ work in the exhibition. This event highlights the depth of talent at SFCC that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Over the past few weeks, our Year 9 Food Studies students at Cobblebank Campus have been diving into the rich diversity of Australian cuisines.
As part of their learning, students prepared a variety of dishes that celebrate both traditional and contemporary food culture.
A highlight was creating Korean Tacos - a delicious fusion dish blending Korean flavours with the beloved taco format.

Students also explored vegetarian alternatives, using tofu or plant-based mince to ensure the dish was inclusive, sustainable, and aligned with modern dietary choices.
It was wonderful to see their creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm shine in the kitchen!
