Weekly Reflection

In this final reflection for 2022, I invite all to ponder the thoughts of our Pope and a treasured recent saint about the amazing memorial that is Christmas.

“Christmas is the feast of love incarnate and born for us in Jesus Christ. He is the light of mankind shining in the darkness, giving meaning to human existence and to the whole of history.

“Christmas invites us to reflect, on the one hand, on the drama of history, in which men and women, wounded by sin, ceaselessly search for truth, search for mercy and search for redemption; and, on the other hand, on the goodness of God, who has come towards us to communicate to us the truth that saves and to make us sharers in His friendship and His life.” Pope Francis

We desire to welcome Jesus at Christmas time,

not in a cold manger of our heart

but in a heart so pure, so immaculate,

so warm with love for one another. St Teresa of Calcutta

From the Principal

I cannot believe how fast 2022 has flown and that we have farewelled our students for another year.

The terms were filled with many opportunities – from sporting, arts and academic events to social justice and community-building activities and celebrations.

Thank you to our Parents and Friends Association, who assisted with our Democracy Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser on election day. We raised more than $700, which will go towards our Christmas appeal for families struggling at this time of year.

Our congratulations to Year 8 student Antonio and Year 7 student Chloe who were confirmed during a mass held at St Anthony’s Church in Melton last week. Thank you to Andrew Sciberras, one of our teachers who spent several lunchtimes preparing the students.

Congratulations also to all of our Year 7-9 award recipients for 2022. It was wonderful to acknowledge students who received academic and community awards during our annual presentation held in Sheehan Stadium last Friday. A full list of recipients is available here

I would also like to acknowledge and farewell staff leaving our community. We wish them well and thank them for their contributions to the College.

Staff not pictured: Lachlan Bezzina (Student Support Officer), Michael Bill (GAP Tutor), Peter Botrous (Teacher), Snigdha Mahajan (GAP Tutor), Natalie Valentine (GAP Tutor).

In our final newsletter for 2022, I thank all our parents and guardians who supported staff and students throughout the year.

We wish all families a safe and restful Christmas and New Year break. May the joy of Christmas bring peace and happiness to all in our community.

The College has reviewed its day structure for 2023 at the Melton West Campus.

In 2023, the start time  will be 9am and the finish time will be 3.15pm.

From the Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

Last Friday we celebrated students’ achievements during our Year 7-9 2022 Junior Awards Ceremony.

Almost 100 students received recognition across various areas, from academics and leadership to sports and community.

Award certificates were presented for Academic Excellence (being in the Top 5 for the subject) and Endeavour. These recognise achievement across the semester and acknowledge students’ continued effort and commitment to a positive learning environment for all.

Many of our senior student leaders returned to help and support the awards ceremony with the 2023 School Captains presenting the prayer and congratulatory address. We thank these students for being role models to the junior students.

Students also recently received several VET awards at the Western Edge Cluster (WEC) Awards Ceremony.

The talent amongst our students is evident across each of these presentations and ceremonies.

We will celebrate the achievements of our senior students early next year at the Senior Awards Ceremony. This will include the 2022 VCE results.

I would like to acknowledge all students who have worked to their full potential with the return to face-to-face learning. May you continue to know that the College, your peers and your families are proud of your achievements.

I would also like to acknowledge the dedicated staff at CRC Melton who have worked to engage, support and provide a positive and respectful learning environment in which all our students can learn, thrive and flourish.

I wish everyone a happy and sacred Christmas and a safe and relaxing holiday break.

Year 11 2023 Leadership Day

Our Year 11 2023 students had a fantastic time at Lake Dewar Discovery Camp last Thursday where they enjoyed a leadership and team-building day as part of their Jump Start program.

The Amazing Race involved a series of challenges over three hours in their new house groups to test their communication and problem-solving skills.

All students behaved exceptionally, were actively involved and demonstrated high levels of collaboration, teamwork, and enjoyment throughout the day.

The final results were:

1st: Glowrey - 70 pts

2nd: Catherine - 67 pts

3rd: MacKillop - 66 pts

4th: Bernard - 65 pts

5th: TIE: Dominic and Lawrence - 61 pts

7th: Anthony - 49 pts

These are the first points allocated for the House Cup for 2023.

Ensemble Christmas Carol Tour

Our Vocal Ensemble went on their annual Christmas Carols tour last week, performing to appreciative audiences at St Anthony’s Primary School and St Bernard’s Primary School.

In between the school visits, they also entertained lunchtime crowds at Woodgrove Shopping Centre.

Below are some comments from our singers:

“It was so much fun and I’m glad I was able to put a smile on people’s faces and get them in the holiday spirit.” Amelia, Year 7

“The highlight of the day for me was when we went to St Anthony’s and St Bernard’s and all the kids joined in and sang Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Jingle Bells with us. Many people in the food court at Woodgrove sang with us too. I enjoyed the day and loved bringing the Christmas spirit to our audiences. Overall, it was a fun and uplifting day. Elesha, Year 10

“It was a beautiful experience. The audience usually sing along in the last couple of songs and it was so heart-warming to hear all the voices enjoying the performance. I enjoyed the day and look forward to future tours. Jordan, Year 9

Religious Education Curriculum Review

Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools is seeking input from parents and guardians into a review currently being undertaken on the Religious Education (RE) Curriculum in Catholic schools.

The review is being led by Ms Netina Giacco, Professor John Haldane and Professor Gerard O’Shea.

A crucial part of this review is learning from the wisdom, insights and experience of those at the ‘coalface’, including parents and guardians whose children attend a Catholic school.

The questions in the survey are broad and open-ended, to allow you to provide as much or as little input as you feel appropriate.

The survey can be accessed and completed via this link: Provide your input to a review of the Religious Education Curriculum

Contribution to the survey will be anonymous, although it does request some demographic information to contextualise results.

In acknowledging the challenges and pressures on everyone at this time of year, the deadline for responses is 20 December 2022.

We are grateful for your assistance and support in this important work.
