Weekly Reflection

When was the last time that we heard the wind of your Spirit
roar through this place?
When was the last time your fire lit up this room?
When was the last time we took you at your word
and met together in expectation of your Spirit filling this place,
and these lives with your Glory and Power?
Lord, you challenge us with Pentecost.
Do we believe that this was a once in eternity experience,
never to be repeated?
That the Holy Spirit was poured out on your followers for a single purpose,
and ended His work at that instant?
If so, then maybe that is why the Church seems so powerless in this age,
helpless when faced with the needs both spiritual and physical,
that we see in the world.
Lord, as we meet together, and celebrate once again
the memory of that first Pentecost, may it be for us as it was then
a moment of empowerment, an awareness of your Glory in this dark world,
a life changing experience. Amen.

From the Principal

With our focus on Pentecost, Father Ron Rolheiser OMI, provides some interesting insights:

‘We all live with inferiorities, dashed dreams, and deep frustrations. Because of this we tend to grow jealous and envy other people’s lives, seeing in their lives the things that we are missing within our own. This increases our disappointment with who we are and, all too often, puts us into an attitude within which we refuse to accept what is good, happy, creative, and pleasurable within our own lives.

There is a beautiful image in Scripture that depicts this. After the resurrection of Jesus, his disciples are unable to pick up the spirit of his new presence. They want, instead, to have their old earthly Jesus back. Eventually, they are reduced to huddling in fear in a locked room, paralysed.

When they do receive the spirit of the resurrected Christ, they burst from that room, now alive with the spirit for their actual lives. When we live in restless unhappiness, not satisfied with our situation in life because we would want a different job, or a different family, or a different body, or a different set of friends, or a different city to live it, we live, like the Apostles, huddled in fear.

Pentecost in not an abstract mystery. We are asked to accept the spirit of our actual lives. When we do this, then we no longer belittle our own lives but know that even with all our inferiorities and frustrations, we are something special.’

The Catholic Regional College Social Justice team recognises this week to promote positive images of people who have experienced displacement and create a culture of welcome in our community. The week also includes International Refugee Day on 20th June.

In order to best understand some of the hardships experienced by those seeking asylum and refugees, a screening of acclaimed documentary, Human Flow will be held on 20th June in the Performing Arts Centre. Human Flow, directed by Ai Weiwei, explores what is the greatest human displacement since World War II and the personal stories of those escaping famine, climate change and war. Screening will commence promptly at 6:30pm, doors will open at 6:00pm.

Book Reviews

Growing Up African in Australia By Maxine Beneba Clarke

Australians of the African diaspora have arrived here in many different ways- directly from the continent; via the Caribbean, the Americas and the United Kingdom; making the journey to Australia over one generation, or several. What is it like to grow up African in Australia? Growing Up African aims to defy, question or shed light on the many stereotypes that currently exist about the vibrant extended African community in Australia. Contributors include Faustina Agolley, Santilla Chingaipe, Carly Findlay, Khalid Warsame, Nyadol Nyuon, Tariro Mavondo, Magan Magan and many, many more.

The Deadly 7 By Garth Jennings

The Deadly 7 is a monster adventure by Garth Jennings, writer and director of animated movie Sing, and is packed full of hilarious illustrations. One night, deep in the catacombs of St Paul’s Cathedral, eleven-year-old Nelson stumbles across a strange and ancient machine, which accidentally extracts the seven deadly sins from his soul in the form of living breathing, grumpy, smelly monsters. Suddenly he’s stuck with seven angry, sneaky, greedy, vain, adorable, thieving, farting new friends, who help him form the best (and weirdest) plan ever: to find and rescue his missing beloved big sister.

Fr Rob Galea's Coming Home Tour

Coming Home is Fr Rob Galea’s seventh music project. This tour has been four years in the making and is a collaboration with some of the best songwriters and producers from across the world. In this album, Fr Galea sings about the need to return to our first Love; we choose Christ but we often run away. No matter how far we wander, God will run towards us as we begin our journey back home.

Fr Rob Galea's ‘Coming Home’ concert will be an amazing and contemporary witness of faith that will reach out to young people in a way they can relate to easily. This event is open to all ages and we encourage families to come and celebrate the love of God, through music, together.

We are hopeful of drawing as many young people as possible to further inspire them in their Catholic faith and to encourage them to know how Jesus can work in their daily lives.
