I was fortunate to attend today's SACCSS Cross Country held at Brimbank Park. The weather was wonderful and CRC students' spirits were high! Further details and photos of the event will be published in next week's newsletter.

Class Surveys

Staff will undertake class surveys over the next week. These are now a regular feature of our teaching practice and are designed to provide feedback to staff on how their students are learning and can highlight areas of student affirmation and concern. Staff will then use this to adjust their teaching where necessary to improve learning across the class.

Mid-Year Assessment

To assist families in their planning, our mid-year assessment program will take place in June. Years 7 & 8 students will undertake Timed Assessment Tasks (TATS) in the week 3rd-7th June, Year 9 students will have exams in English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities as well as other end of semester assessment tasks from 13th-21st June. A more formal Exam period will operate for all Year 10-11 subjects from 13th-21st June, with students only required at school for exams. A more detailed program will be finalised and released in the coming weeks.

In the last week of Term 2, Year 10 students will undertake Work Experience (24th-28th June) and Year 9 students will participate in their City experience program and Reflection Day.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Years 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 14th May, Wednesday 15th May and Thursday 16th May. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and school leadership which can be used to improve student achievement.

All Year 7 and 9 students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. The College’s Learning Support staff will contact the parents of those students who may be eligible for an exemption due to a diagnosed disability. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted.

Parents will receive a personal NAPLAN report later in the year. The report will describe each student’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will also show performance in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia. This report should be kept by parents as it may be required in later years for scholarship applications or change of schools.

These times are stipulated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority to ensure all schools are undertaking tests at common times. Students will need to have a ruler, an eraser and book to read (if they finish early) as well as their books for the remainder of each class unless told otherwise (as most tests will not take a full 1 period time allotment). I particularly stress the need for all Year 7 and 9 students to have their own calculator for the Thursday morning test.

On Thursday 9th May, VCAL Foundation classes will be holding a Mother’s Day stall at recess and lunchtime. Types of gifts available are plants, cards, jewellery, homewares, coffee mugs with chocolates and homemade slices and truffles.

Prices range from $2.00 - $10.00. This project forms part of the VCAL Work Related Skills program.

On Tuesday 30th April, the Senior Girls AFL team started off their season playing rivals CRC Sydenham. Despite the girls' not-so-accurate goal kicking in the last quarter, we managed to still get the win. Final score was 49-24 which was a great start to the season by the girls. Well done to coaches Mrs Dickson & Miss Naumcevski.

The first day of May saw the Year 7s begin their first round of Premier League. We sent out 7 teams to compete against Caroline Chisholm Catholic College for round 1 of the season. The students were super excited to compete and enjoyed the day. We look forward to the upcoming rounds that take place on Wednesday afternoons. The results are as follows:

At last week's Moorabool Youth awards Abby Mossop and Chantal Bala won the major award jointly for their Contribution to the Arts through their dancing achievements at Dream Entertainment and in particular their unbeaten hip hop duo that won 4 State titles in 2018. Abby has achieved many significant milestones while dancing with Dream Entertainment including being part of the Carlton Cadets Acrobatics Team who performed at AFL games. She is also part of the State Champion Hip Hop Crew D Nation.

Chantal also won the Mayor's Award for her dancing and personal development achievements at Dream Entertainment and for overcoming adversity in her personal life. Chantal is also a member of the award winning D Nation Hip Hop Crew.
