In the contemporary learning environment at St Francis Catholic College, Year 7, 8 and 9 students have access to a laptop program for their junior years.
These devices are used to enhance student learning with a variety of subject-specific applications, and provide access to textbooks and a variety of online testing programs.
The learning needs and final work product of students in Years 10, 11, and 12 are very different from those in the earlier years of secondary schooling. As a result, the junior laptop does not provide a suitable platform for ongoing senior studies.
In Year 10 all students are issued with a new school-mandated laptop for their senior years at the College.
Every classroom in the College has access to a data projector, Vivi access and speakers. Printers, scanners and photocopiers are also available for students. Wireless access to the internet and technical support is provided to all students as part of the junior and senior laptop programs.
The College provides computer laboratories that meet the specific learning needs of various subjects that require a more powerful device than a laptop. Specialised ICT equipment includes 3D printers, robotics equipment, and data loggers used in some subjects.
St Francis Catholic College is passionate about providing equity and access to emerging technology and experiences for all students.
In 2023, we became the first Catholic school in Victoria to open a state-of-the-art smart classroom equipped with virtual and augmented reality technology.
Our Lumination Learning Lab is designed to boost student engagement, break down barriers and empower students with the skills they need in the future workforce.
A traditional classroom at our Melton Campus has been transformed into a high-tech, immersive lab where students use virtual reality headsets instead of textbooks to experience the curriculum like never before.
A team of staff have been trained to use the technology, which provides experiences directly linked to the Victorian curriculum. Teachers can access resources, lesson plans and more to help them begin immersive learning inside the lab.
Walking through an Egyptian tomb, exploring Rome, navigating outer space, delving inside a human cell and dissecting a virtual frog are just some of the experiences students have access to in the Lumination Learning Lab.
It allows for creativity and artistic endeavour on a completely new level while enabling collaboration and testing of ideas.
Classes in our Lumination Lab transport students outside the traditional classroom. We know this generation of students embraces and uses technology in every aspect of their lives. Books and whiteboards are still necessary, but this new smart classroom will challenge students to explore all possibilities and provide experiences that may otherwise be out of reach.
