Harmony Day

Today the College embraced and celebrated the many cultures that make up our community as part of Harmony Day.

The full College assembly brought together students and staff from Melton and Cobblebank campuses and was a joyous reflection of the many things we have in common – a willingness to embrace diversity, be inclusive and appreciate the traditions and stories from our cultural backgrounds.

As always, our Assembly began with an Acknowledgement of Country by our senior students.

Guest speaker Nyingot Reech shared her inspiring story during the assembly. Born in South Sudan, Nyingot was four years old when her family was forced to flee their home country due to the ongoing civil war.

They eventually settled in Australia, and Nyingot dreamed of becoming a youth counsellor for multicultural young people.

She is currently studying Youth Work and Community Development at Australian Catholic University. In the next five years, she hopes to start a not-for-profit organisation to help refugees and immigrants adjust to their new lives in Australia.

Following Nyingot’s presentation, we enjoyed a showcase of the diverse cultures within our school.

Year 7 Cobblebank student Demitri led a parade of students wearing cultural dress through the stadium. It was a fantastic prelude to performances by our Indian, Congalese and Pasifika students. All students received a rousing and enthusiastic response!

We are truly grateful to everyone who got involved, whether it was by wearing the colour orange or their cultural dress. We look forward to building on this wonderful celebration of our College community.
