Students Meet Indigenous Artist

During terms 2 to 4, Year 9 students Lily and Ruby have attended the Western Bulldogs Nallei Jerring Leadership Program.

The program includes practical and theory-based activities designed to enhance cultural knowledge, leadership, teamwork, resilience, communication, support networks, and connection to community among young Indigenous people.

Last month, Lily and Ruby attended an art workshop run by Indigenous artist Merindah Gunya (Bayley).

Bayley was born and raised in Warrnambool, Victoria, where she started painting from a young age and learned from her Elders about traditional storytelling through painting. She currently lives on Bunurong country in Melbourne.

During the workshop, Bayley shared her story as someone who pursued an arts pathway and taught the Indigenous students how to represent family, brother, and sister totems.

Lily and Ruby then had the opportunity to create a canvas to share their story.
