The Ascension of Jesus celebrated over the weekend prior to Pentecost this coming Sunday is an event recorded three times in the New Testament: at the end of Luke, the beginning of Acts, and in what’s called the longer ending of Mark In each version of the Ascension story, Jesus has different final instructions for the disciples – the ones in Mark being the most colourful.
“Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mark 16: 15 - 20).
But in every account, Jesus tells the disciples to go and be witnesses of the gospel they have received. On this point, all three speak in one voice. It would seem this mission is non-negotiable. How we act in ‘witness’ today is up to each of us.
At his Ascension, Christ assures onlookers “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” (Acts 1:8). Little did his disciples know that they would receive this spiritual power almost immediately. It came in the form of awe as the wonderstruck crowd watched as Christ rose into the heavens.
Awe, it turns out, is an extremely powerful emotion.
According to a university study, awe makes even the most selfish people want to do something good for others. Awe encourages people to forgo self-interest and concern themselves with the greater good. Or to put all this research in Christian terms, through the awesome power of the Spirit, we become the Body of Christ.

God of heaven and earth, we celebrate the Christ who came to live as one of us.
We welcome the Christ who would stop at nothing – not even death – to proclaim God’s love for all people.
We celebrate the Christ who rose from death to show that there is no end to God’s love.
And we celebrate the Christ who, in leaving this earth, entrusted to us the task of continuing this work.
Amen.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the students and families of Exford Primary School following last week's bus accident.
As a College, we are raising funds to support the many families affected by the tragedy.
Tomorrow, Wednesday,24 May, students are welcome to wear their footy jumpers with their PE sports pants to school for a gold coin donation, which will be collected during their morning Mentor session.
All funds raised, along with sales from our Athletics Carnival sausage sizzle, will be provided to Exford Primary School.
Students who do not wish to participate should wear the usual College uniform required on the day.

Melton and Cobblebank students swapped the classroom for the athletics track on Thursday to compete in the first annual Athletics Carnival as St Francis Catholic College.
The day began with our Year 12 cohort who took to the track one last time, showcasing their creative costumes in a parade rivalling New York Fashion Week (Kendall Jenner who?).
Competitors from each House then vied for the top spot in various track, field and novelty events. But despite their valiant efforts, Glowrey had them “green” with envy, claiming the title with 1168.5 points followed closely by Bakhita (1100) and MacKillop (1062.5).
House spirit remained high throughout the day (as did the sun, much to everyone’s relief) with staff and students alike wearing accessories in their House colours and cheering each other on from the sidelines.
St Francis’ new House marquees were also revealed for the first time along with banners bearing their mascots.
Congratulations to all students who participated in this year’s event and thank you to all staff and parents/guardians who attended!

Last Tuesday, Melton’s Year 10, 11 and 12 Drama students performed their Harms of Smoking and Vaping and Living on a Dollar Day ensembles to a live audience.
After a term of creation and many rehearsals, the performances were outstanding and showcased the many talents of our students. They should be so proud of what they achieved.

Eager to share their love of volleyball, a few of our Melton senior boys offered up their lunchtime and study period to run a training session for the Cobblebank Year 7 Premier League boys volleyball team who had a bye last week.
The senior boys ran drills on receiving, setting, serving and most importantly how to celebrate after a great winning point.
The Year 7 students were thrilled to learn from the older boys and even hit a few serves our seniors struggled to return. Lots of laughs were shared along with some high fives at the end to show their appreciation.
Hopefully the Year 7 boys can take what they've learned into their game next week.

While some of our Year 7 Cobblebank students head across Melbourne weekly to represent the College in the SACCSS Premier League sporting competition, others have eagerly volunteered their time to help others in the Melton community.
Six students attend the Melton Food Bank where they help in a range of different ways.
Some of the tasks include dividing large amounts of food into smaller quantities by repacking them, helping customers pick food from the shelves and working with other volunteers.
At the same time, ten students have helped run various lunchtime activities at St Catherine of Siena Primary School. They have been welcomed each week and are thoroughly enjoying their visits to our neighbouring primary school.

Last Friday, Melton’s Senior Girls AFL team headed to Sydenham to play in the annual Runnalls Cup match.
The match is a memorial game to remember the life of Bruce Runnalls, a past Deputy Principal of CRC Melton and past Principal of CRC Sydenham who sadly passed away in 2011.
Bruce loved his footy so we are proud to be able to hold this annual event to honour his life.
Although CRC Sydenham took home the win, we are very proud of our girls’ efforts and the sportsmanship shown on the day from both teams. Best on ground for the day goes to our two goal-kickers, Ebony and Mikaela who fought hard the entire match. Well done girls.

Dress Like a Pirate Day for Childhood Brain Cancer Research was a rousing success at the College last Friday.
Captain Jorgensen defeated First Mate Danielle and made her walk the plank. All the junior pirates made air canons in the library with Captain Brown.
In total, the crew raised approximately $250 for the cause.
Since 2015, Pirate Day has raised more than $630,000 thanks to schools, community groups and businesses across the country. This helps The Kids’ Cancer Project provide funding for scientific researchers, who are busy making waves in the lab to turn the tide on childhood brain cancer.
