Weekly Reflection

Pentecost Sunday – 5 June 2022

Although Jesus had ascended into heaven, the disciples didn’t have to wait long before the Holy Spirit stepped onto the scene on Pentecost Sunday. Fifty days after Resurrection Sunday, the next era of God’s kingdom arrived.

“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:1-4

The passage goes on to say that the apostles had a chance to speak to the people, and thousands believed and gave their lives to Christ that day.

A Prayer for Pentecost to Reflect and Rejoice

Dear Heavenly Father,

On this day, 2000 years ago, you inaugurated the church by having the Holy Spirit dwell in your believers.

We rejoice that you have allowed us all to experience new life.

Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit, our comforter, our guide, and so many other things.

And may we continue to celebrate this day until you return again.

Amen.

From the Principal

Flexible senior secondary pathways for students have long been a hallmark of Catholic Regional College Melton. Commencing in Year 10, students can select from various career pathways that suit their skills and interests.

The senior secondary pathway reform that will come into effect in 2023 will bring even greater flexibility for students when selecting their future study choices.

In 2023 the College will offer new VCE Vocational Major and the Victorian Pathways Certificate. These new senior years programs will provide students with a more tailored and rigorous program of study in their final years.

The VCE Vocational Major will retain the best aspects of the VCAL program - that is, the applied learning and vocational options but will have the added benefit of allowing students to combine VCE units into their program. This increased choice will enable students to gain experiences that prepare them for future employment pathways.

The Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) is an inclusive Year 11 and 12 standards-based certificate that meets the needs of a smaller number of students who are not yet able or ready to complete the VCE (including the VCE Vocational Major).

Offering these two new certificates alongside the traditional VCE suite of subjects will allow all senior students to select a pathway that best suits their strengths and interests.

As we approach subject selection time, it is important that parents and guardians begin discussing the various options with students.

Year 10 Hospitality

Our Year 10 Hospitality students have had an enjoyable and productive semester developing complex practical skills for food preparation and presentation to industry standards.

The students finished their semester on a high last Friday, preparing beautifully presented and delicious afternoon tea grazing boxes for College staff.

Students designed and produced luscious sponge cakes from scratch earlier this semester, which they decorated to professional cake decorating standards.

Another highlight was the cheese and fruit grazing board – students designed and created the boards using food preparation and garnishing techniques.

I congratulate the Year 10 Hospitality students who have displayed the utmost commitment and dedication to their learning this semester. I wish them well as they complete their end of semester exams.

Big Freeze Fundraiser

Students will tip buckets of iced water over staff during a Big Freeze fundraiser on Tueday 21 June to raise much needed funds and awareness for the fight against motor neurone disease.

To date staff who have volunteered to take part include our Principal Marlene Jorgensen, Cheryl Bullen, Jordan Reithofer, Brad Ryan, Trent Hobson, Trish Griffin and myself. We will be on the green next to the canteen ready to take our iced drenching at lunchtime.

To support this great cause, some of our VCAL students in conjunction with the Social Justice Team have created an online fundraising page where you can make a donation. Our goal is to raise at least $2000 before the end of the term.

To sponsor us or contribute to the campaign click here Catholic Regional College Melton Big Freeze 8 fundraiser or scan the QR code.

Students are also encouraged to wear their blue FightMND beanies on the day if they have one. Let’s make this an event to remember!

What is FightMND?

FightMND’s purpose is to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Motor Neurone Disease. Neale Daniher, former Essendon player and Melbourne coach, was diagnosed in 2013. He is one of the three co-founders of FightMND and the patron of FightMND.

MND is a terminal neurological condition that ultimately leads to the loss of movement and the ability to speak, eat and breathe. Two Australians die of MND and two more are diagnosed every day. On average, people live for just 27 months after diagnosis. There is no effective treatment or cure.

Year 7 Jiu Jitsu Champion

The College congratulates Year 7 student Renzo (7 Josephine) on his Jiu Jitsu achievements.

Last weekend, Renzo and his family travelled to the Gold Coast for the Australian Federation of Brasilian Jiu Jitsu Queensland State Championships. He won his first match (with submission) but lost the second (by points). It was an elimination round so he was pleased to score a place on the podium.

In February this year, Renzo came first in his division at the Australian Jiu Jitsu Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre

and recently notched up a win in the Nogi competition at the Grappling Industries Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Wrestling Competition.

With an intense training schedule and many competitions scheduled between now and the end of the year, Renzo has shown amazing commitment to his sport and we wish him all the best in the months ahead.

Reconciliation Week Wrap Up

It was a wet and cold week but that did not dampen the spirits of our Social Justice team who spent lunchtime handing out ribbons to students and staff as part of our Reconciliation Week activities.

A huge thanks to the team for their commitment and to everyone who came along to support their efforts.

You have all helped build a community that values Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
