Weekly Reflection

Sunday was the first World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly. The anniversary, desired by Pope Francis, will be held every year on the fourth Sunday of July. The goal is to reflect on the value of these figures who represent our roots and pass on traditions.

Pope Francis’ address on Sunday 25 July 2021

“I am with you always” (Mt 28:20): this is the promise the Lord made to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. They are the words that he repeats to you today, dear grandfathers and grandmothers, dear elderly friends. “I am with you always” are also the words that I, as Bishop of Rome and an elderly person like yourselves, would like to address to you on this first World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly. The whole Church is close to you – to us – and cares about you, loves you and does not want to leave you alone!

I am well aware that this message comes to you at a difficult time: the pandemic swept down on us like an unexpected and furious storm; it has been a time of trial for everyone, but especially for us elderly persons. Many of us fell ill, others died or experienced the death of spouses or loved ones, while others found themselves isolated and alone for long periods … Given this, I want to tell you that you are needed in order to help build, in fraternity and social friendship, the world of tomorrow: the world in which we, together with our children and grandchildren, will live once the storm has subsided.

All of us must “take an active part in renewing and supporting our troubled societies”. Among the pillars that support this new edifice, there are three that you, better than anyone else, can help to set up. Those three pillars are dreams, memory and prayer. The Lord’s closeness will grant to all, even the frailest among us, the strength needed to embark on a new journey along the path of dreams, memory and prayer.

A prayer of thanks for grandparents

God of love,

We thank you for our wonderful grandparents.

They bring such joy and happiness into our lives.

Thank you for all the special times that we have with them.

Please watch over them, protect them and care for them now.

May they know your goodness and love always.

Amen.

From the Principal

As a Principal, I usually try to write my newsletter article on the weekend. That way I am always sure to meet the Monday morning deadline ready for publication each Tuesday.

But as I sat to write on Monday afternoon, I was still unsure what I could say about Wednesday and our possible return to school!

This uncertainty, changing health advice and mixed messages, the arguing of state governments and images of protesters punching horses may leave us feeling COVID fatigued.

We need to acknowledge that the weariness we feel is normal. The advice below may be useful to help minimise the impact of COVID on our lives:

As a Catholic community, however, one of our great strengths not listed in these tips is prayer.

And so this week, I share scripture from Corinthians.

We are often troubled, but not crushed;

sometimes in doubt, but never in despair;

there are many enemies, but we are never without a friend;

and though badly hurt at times, we are not destroyed.

Corinthians (4:8-9)

These words speak of resilience and are also reflected in messages our students encounter through The Resilience Project - the ability to experience trouble but not be crushed, bounce back, and perhaps even grow from the experience.

As we all return to the College tomorrow, let us continue to pray for an end worldwide to the current pandemic.

Enrolments

We are currently accepting enrolment applications for Year 7 students in 2023. Enrolments are open for both the Cobbelbank and West Melton campuses.

Families are reminded that these applications are due on Friday 20 August. The College also has limited places available in some year levels for 2022. Please contact our Director of Community Relations Ms Kerrie-Ann Matthews for more information.

College Naming Steering Committee

The CRC Melton College Naming Steering Committee met last week to discuss suggestions for our new College name. It was wonderful to see the effort that had gone into researching the various names.

The team, which includes staff, students, parents, and parish priests, will meet again next month to narrow the names down to the final three suggestions. These will be submitted to Archbishop Peter Comensoli for his decision.

From the Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

Tomorrow (Wednesday 28 July) we will conduct online interviews with our Year 10 students and families to review pathway and subject selection for 2022. We will also interview Year 9 students considering a Vincit or VCAL pathway for 2022.

These interviews enable students to consider the type of learner they are, their strengths in subjects and career aspirations beyond CRC Melton. We know families will find these discussions invaluable for the decision-making process.

On Thursday, (29 July) our Year 10 2022 Subject and Pathway Information Evening will be held online. This night provides information for students leading into their senior years of school. Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk about their own career journey with their child. It is an important step in reflecting and understanding career pathways.

This generation of students will undertake an average of six career changes in their lifetime, with many careers yet to be identified in this global world.

Teamwork, collaboration, initiative and innovation skills are sought after by employers and we work to incorporate these in the curriculum. Our Year 9 Problem Based Learning (PBL) units aim to develop these important skills in all our students.

From the Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing

Yesterday (Monday 26 July) our staff collaborated in a number of professional learning sessions. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on initiatives implemented last semester.

We also focused on Restorative Practices and how we are developing this approach at the College.

Restorative Practices work on re-building relationships. They help students understand and think about their behaviour and promote strategies that lead to positive outcomes for the school and the individual. This process fosters a positive learning environment for all students, enabling them to fulfil their potential.

Through our faith, Student Engagement Framework and Core Wellbeing Values, we continue to promote the qualities we want to see in our students at school and as they embark on their chosen paths beyond our College.

This week I would like to share with you a TED talk by American teacher Rita Pierson, watched by our staff yesterday. Rita boldly and rightly declares that every child needs a champion. I encourage you to listen to her story. Watch now

Year 7 2023 Enrolments Close Friday 20 August

Write a Book in a Day

On 11 August, students will write a book in a day to raise money for children’s cancer research.

Write a Book in a Day, is an annual competition promoting literacy, collaboration and creativity, administered by independent national charity, The Kids’ Cancer Project.

This year the school has entered both junior and senior teams in the competition. Students will be given a brief and within 12 hours they will write, illustrate, and submit a storybook targeted to a youth audience. Completed books are uploaded to an online library to give access to children undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country.

The event gives our students the opportunity to develop skills that will set them up for life such as teamwork, problem-solving and leadership. It is also an incredible opportunity to encourage and develop their creative writing skills.

In 2020, more than 7600 writers and illustrators in 1000 separate teams participated in Write a Book in a Day, raising more than $530,000 for vital scientific research through The Kids’ Cancer Project.

With more children dying of cancer in Australia than any other disease, Col Reynolds, Founder of The Kids’ Cancer Project is eager for the community to get behind what he views as a major health concern.

“On average every year in Australia 156 children die of cancer. That’s about five classrooms of children, or almost three whole bus loads,” he said. “If there was a stretch of road that consistently had that many fatalities the whole country would be up in arms, we need to have that same level of concern directed to kids’ cancer.”

“It warms my heart to see kids helping kids. That’s why I’m so proud of the way students, through Write a Book in a Day, are helping to change these statistics and I know their sponsors will give generously to encourage their creative and philanthropic endeavours,” said Mr Reynolds.

You can support our school’s fundraising initiative by donating to our team fundraising pages.
