From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 4 2020. I hope that students were able to take some time away from screens and relax with family.

Our VCE Unit 3/4 students will complete the General Achievement Test (GAT) tomorrow (Wednesday).

This year the GAT will be particularly important for our students. If for some reason, such as illness, a student underperforms in an exam, their GAT result can be used to lift a score. It is essential, therefore, that all students do their very best in the GAT and we wish them well.

For Year 12 students, Term 4 is filled with memorable milestones and this year will be no different.

The College student and staff leadership teams have been working on alternative celebrations to allow Year 12 students to mark the completion of their secondary education in a suitable and significant way.

Term 4 will see senior students and staff work towards two key goals:

• To ensure every 2020 Year 12 student can complete their VCE and VCAL, and appropriately mark this significant milestone.
• To support students’ sense of direction and opportunity, including learning about areas of employment demand in the coming years

Year 7 students return on site from Monday 12 October

We received with great joy the news on Monday that our Year 7 students can return to school on Monday 12 October.

Our Year 8 to 10 students will return on Monday 26 October.

For all Year 7 to 10 students, the priorities for Term 4 will be to:

• Begin the process of catch-up learning and continue to extend those who progressed well during Distance Learning Mode (DLM).
• Support students to re-establish friendships and class groups when they are back on-site and provide additional support where needed.
• Helping every student prepare for 2021 with a sense of purpose and optimism.
• Building students’ personal and social capability and encouraging physical activity.

No room for complacency

A critical aspect of the return to on-site learning will be the strict enforcement of physical distancing, especially at the start and finish of the school day.

The College will take every step available to maintain social distancing of students, to enforce the wearing of masks and promote good hygiene practices.

Looking Ahead

Canteen Reopens

The College canteen will operate its usual recess and lunch service from Monday 12 October as students and staff return to on-site classes.

Pre-orders are strongly encouraged and can be submitted via the Ultimate Schools website. To set up an account visit www.ultimateschools.com.au and follow the prompts. Pre-orders can also be submitted direct to the canteen by the end of recess.

A maximum of 10 students will be permitted in the canteen at any one time and students must use the hand sanitiser at the door before they enter. There are also crosses marked on the canteen floor to show students where they should stand. Only students who wish to buy food should enter the canteen (friends need to wait outside).

Students waiting to enter will queue outside the canteen. Apple Pay and Eftpos are accepted to minimise the use of cash.

Canteen staff are cleaning high-touch surfaces at the end of end each service period and following all Health Department guidelines.

From the Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

Welcome back to all families as we begin Term 4.

As a community, we continue to be agile and flexible in our approach to learning and teaching.

This week, students have begun classes in Distance Learning Mode, with our Unit 3/4 students on site tomorrow (Wednesday) to complete their General Achievement Test.

This is usually undertaken in June; however, due to the complications of COVID-19, it was moved to Term 4. Students will be required to wear a face mask and adhere to social distancing requirements. Our venue has been set up to meet all the health and safety standards for undertaking an assessment on site.

Week 2 arrangements – Year 7, 11 and 12

Week 2 (Monday 12 October) will see the return of some year levels to face-to-face learning and this will be an exciting time for both students and teachers.

When classes resume on site, normal 75-minute lessons will occur. In line with Government educational guidelines, unless a student falls under the immune-compromised category and must remain at home, teachers are not required to provide remote learning.

Teachers may provide access to the lesson plan for the students to undertake self-directed learning.

During Week 2 our VCE Unit 3/4 students will undertake practice exams in preparation for their end of year Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) exams.

This immersion experience is invaluable and enables students to hone their skills under exam conditions. VCAL and VET classes will continue during Week 2 however, Unit 3/4 students will not undertake formal lessons during this time.

We thank families for their support as we navigate through the weekly changes and continue to focus on providing innovative and engaging learning during these unusual times.

Returning to school

COVID-19 has caused major disruptions to daily life and children are feeling these changes deeply. While the return to school will be welcome and exciting for many students, others will be feeling anxious or frightened.

Here are some tips to help your child navigate their return to school.

School Photos 2020

Arthur Reed Photos will take annual school photos of Year 11 and 12 students on Tuesday 20 October.

All students must be in full winter uniform. Boys must be clean-shaven and girls should not be wearing makeup. No facial piercings are permitted. Students who fail to comply will not have their photo taken.

Year 7-10 photos will be taken Thursday 5 November. Again, students must be in full winter uniform. Details for ordering are similar to Year 11 and 12 students and more information will be available closer to the date. Family photos will be taken on 5 November.

There is no need to return any forms or money to school before your child’s photo day.

Unique codes will be issued to all students on or after the photo day so you can register online to view your child’s images. To register, follow the simple instructions on your child’s flyer once you receive it.

When images are completed and in the webshop, all parents who have registered will be notified by SMS and email so they can view and order photos.

To ensure you are purchasing school photos for the current year, please wait for notifications that 2020 images are online before placing orders.

If you do not have Internet access, please contact the College for an order form, which is also attached below. Please note these cash orders can only be accepted up until photo day.

College uniform Term 4

As students begin the return to on-site classes, they have the option of wearing their summer or winter uniform up until Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November, after which the summer uniform is compulsory.

However, all Year 7 to 10 students must wear their winter uniform on Thursday 5 November for the school photos.

A reminder that the only jewellery permitted in the ear is one plain silver or gold stud or one small sleeper. If sleepers are worn they must be removed during Physical Education classes and at other times as requested by staff.

No facial piercings are permitted and if worn, these items will be confiscated and returned at the end of term. All boys must be clean shaven.

Below are the summer uniform requirements for Term 4. The school jumper is not the outer garment to be worn to and from school.

I hope all students and families had a restful break and are ready for the start of Term 4. A combination of on-site classes and Distance Learning Mode (DLM) will operate over the first few weeks.

2021 Subject Selections

Again, thank you to all families for supporting their children with their 2021 subject selections.

Year 10 2021 subject selections are still being processed. These have the most complex blockings and with DLM, student electives will be finalised over the coming weeks as students confirm their choices.

Blockings for Year 9 2021 subject selections have now been finalised. We hope students will receive a confirmation of subjects in the coming weeks.

Year 8 Domestique Awards

The Term 3 Domestique Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of Year 8 students in three categories – Empathy, Community and Endeavour.

Below is a list of the recipients for Term 3.

8 Anthony

Endeavour: Madeline Trask - for working so diligently and communicating effectively with her teachers, including pre-service teachers during Term 3.

Community: Rose D’Arienzo - for supporting her peers by attending Project Rockit’s Biggest Online Assembly.

Empathy: Thinh Nguyen - for frequently participating in classes, responding to teacher requests, and communicating well with his peers.

8 Bernard

Endeavour: Isabella Fraser - for her fantastic attendance record, seeking feedback on how she can improve in English, Humanities and Science, and submitting high-quality work.

Community: Oliva Uwimana - for participating in College and homeroom initiatives such as the Gratitude videos and communicating well throughout Distance Learning Mode (DLM).

Empathy: Kalista Moore - for being a supportive friend, helping others in her homeroom with classwork and providing positive motivation and reassurance to classmates.

8 Catherine

Endeavour: David Koko - for consistently working hard in all his subjects and striving to do his best.

8 Dominic

Endeavour: Declan Beech – for always being on time, completing work and seeking help when needed. Declan is also polite in all his online/email communication.

8 Mackillop

Empathy: Jasmine Hodge - for displaying great respect towards her teachers and peers, working hard in all classes and being a great contributor to 8M’s homeroom.

Endeavour: Dannilla Jeevakenthiran - for working consistently across all subject areas, striving to achieve her best and assisting classmates during DLM.

Community: Jack Nelson - for positive contributions to his classes, engaging in class discussions and upholding the social justice values of CRC throughout the year.

8 O’Reilly

Endeavour: Ysabelle Aquino - for always ensuring her work is completed to a high standard, maintaining consistency and dedication to her work during DLM and growing as an independent learner.

Community: Elesha Gruis - for assisting her teachers and classmates whenever she can, particularly during DLM, and participating in extra-curricular activities with dedication and enthusiasm.

Empathy: Charlie Boog – for bringing a positive attitude to the classroom during DLM where her kindness towards others has been needed and welcomed.

8 Reed

Empathy: Olivia Eagle – for being an encouraging, and supportive member of 8R who actively considers the feelings of those around her.

Community: Abraham Dalumpines – for consistently contributing to class discussions and completing multiple homeroom activities and College challenges during DLM.

Endeavour: Madeline Tracey – for working hard in all her classes, consistently striving to achieve her best, challenging herself and supporting her classmates.

New College Captains 2021

The College is pleased to introduce its College Captains for 2021 - Bagena Malua and Raphael Hadfield.

Our new leaders were asked to share a little bit about themselves and their hopes for next year.

I am feel very privileged and honoured to be given the role of College Captain in 2021. I am of a Pacific descent (Tuvalu) and have a fun nature that allows me to easily connect and build a great rapport with both students and staff. I am looking forward to working with the student leadership team and staff to create an enjoyable and safe environment for everyone. I hope that we can get back on track after a long time away from on-site learning. I aim to focus on the personal wellbeing of everyone and the diversity of the College. I cannot wait for what next year brings! Bagena Malua

I am very excited to be one of your College Captains for 2021. I look forward to being the voice of the student body looking toward the future with diligence and optimism. I am a fun, relaxed guy who loves sport and I take joy in uplifting others. I have grown a lot throughout my years at the College. Being a student who wasn't always been motivated in my earlier years, I’ve gone through experiences and struggles that many students could be going through. I hope to share what I’ve learned to give some support and help anyone to reach their goals. I want to make 2021 the best it can possibly be, bouncing back from what has been a time of difficulty and uncertainty. Wearing a badge does not make Bagena or I better than anyone - we want to work with you and the school community to help improve everyone’s time at CRC and we’d love to hear your voice! Raphael Hadfield

Italian Quiz Winner

Year 12 student Maddi Hodge was the winner of the Year 12 Italian Quiz that came to an end in the last week of Term 3.

Using the Who Am I clues, Maddi correctly guessed the name of famous Italian poet and writer Dante Alighieri.

A big thanks to all students who took part. Prizes will be distributed once students return on site.
