Today, we will reflect on Sunday’s reading, 1 Jn 4:7-10.
Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God; for God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins.
When I paused to consider what "God is love” really means for us today, everything became clear. Even when it can seem difficult to find God at times, when you’re sad, rushing, or grieving, love is always there. Even in the darkest, heaviest moment when you think all is lost, it is possible to find God.
One of our seven Principles of Franciscan Education (Franciscan Schools Australia Framework, 2022) highlights that, like St Francis and St Clare, Franciscan education is convinced that “the Creator is found in creation” and the “divine in the human”. Jesus showed us in the incarnation (becoming human) that being human is hard and there will be days of joy and pain. Prayer helps us connect with God during those tough times.
However, our charism calls us to recognise that even when you are too tired or discouraged to pray, you can still live a holy life by simply showing love.
Love becomes a continuous prayer for when you can’t find the words. In that way, love is the language through which we communicate with the divine, a constant dialogue with God even when words fail us.
Our school motto, Faith in Action, reflects our commitment as a College to showing love and faith in God through our actions.
So, when prayer feels out of reach, let us remember that every act of kindness, every gesture of compassion, is an offering to God. May our lives be a commitment to God's presence, a light that shines on love during life's challenges.
Director of Faith and Mission
We were indeed blessed with brilliant weather last week during our campus Athletics carnivals.
On Thursday, our Year 12 Melton students dressed up and led their campus admirably, modelling high participation and enthusiasm regardless of their sporting ability.
On Friday, our Cobblebank students once again demonstrated incredible enthusiasm and support for fellow students, cheering on all competitors and chanting house songs.
Most of the events were fully subscribed, demonstrating that students have a growth mindset and are willing to get in and have a go.
The staff vs. student relay race at Cobblebank was very close, with staff only just managing to beat students this year. Given another 12 months of development, this will be a keenly anticipated race in 2025.
Thank you, particularly to our Sports Coordinator, Claudia Alp, for once again arranging an outstanding program for the day. To all of our staff, maintenance team, support staff, and teachers, we thank you for your enthusiasm and good humour, which help make such memorable moments in a student's time at the College.
I look forward to catching up with parents and guardians at this week's Mother's Day Prayer Reflection and Breakfast. Click here for all the details.
Our mothers have a significant impact on our lives, so it is fitting that we take time out to thank, pray for and spend time with our mums and mother figures.
Principal
It has been a busy start to the new term.
Our applied learning VCE VM and VPC students at Melton Campus have been very creative with the gifts made for their Maker’s Market, to be held this Friday 10 May.
Our Year 11 Melton Campus students attended a TAFE and University Experience Day last Friday and I was lucky enough to visit Deakin University, Geelong Campus, with a number of students.
If you have a child who attended the day, I encourage you to talk to them about:
A reminder to all students and families of the importance of attending class, bringing all requirements for the lesson and participating in excursions organised by the College.
This is a busy time for learning, and gaps due to absences can impact access to options as our students move through their learning journey.
In Term 1, Elevate Education presented Study Skills sessions to our Year 7 and Year 9 students to help them prepare for assessment tasks.
Elevate also offers free parent webinars. Click here to find out more.
Year 10 and 11 exams: Tuesday 11 June - Wednesday 19 June
Year 7 and 8 Timed Assessment Tasks (TATs) - Friday 7 June
Over the next few weeks, Year 10 and 11 students will finish Semester 1 assessment tasks and begin preparing for exams.
The Semester 1 exam timetable will be available soon, and House Leaders and teachers will provide all relevant information to students, including what they may bring into the exam space. Students must wear their full school uniform (not PE uniform).
A catch-up day will be included in the timetable for students who are absent on the day of a scheduled exam.
Below is what students can be working now to prepare for their exams:
Our Year 12 VCE students and Year 11 students undertaking Unit 3/4 VCE subjects are working towards completing Unit 3 this semester.
Teachers will begin Unit 4 once coursework and SACs are complete.
On Thursday 30 May, all Year 12 students (VCE, VCE-VM and VPC) and Year 11 students completing a Unit 3/4 VCE subject will have another opportunity to discuss progress in a second round of Parent Student Teacher Interviews (PSTIs).
These will be held online, and more information will be provided soon.

Melton students swapped the classroom for the athletics track on Thursday for the 2024 Melton Athletics Carnival.
The day kicked off with our Year 12 cohort, who took to the track one last time to showcase their colourful costumes in the traditional farewell parade.
Competitors from each House then vied for top spot in various track, field and novelty events throughout the day. While the overall results are yet to be revealed, the real competition came at the close of the day when students took on their teachers in a Students vs Staff 100m Race.
While some competitors opted for a more leisurely jog, the front-runners left it all on the track, sprinting to a photo finish.
Despite a phenomenal effort from students, Health and Physical Education teacher Jesse Sciberras claimed victory.
House spirit remained high throughout the day (as did the sun!), with staff and students alike wearing accessories in their house colours and cheering each other on from the sidelines.
Congratulations to all students who participated in this year’s event and thank you to all staff who attended. The winners of the 2024 Melton Athletics Carnival Cup, House Spirit Shield and House MVPs will be announced during the next campus assembly.

Cobblebank staff and students converged on Atherstone Athletics Track last Friday for their inaugural campus Athletics Carnival.
The day was a resounding success as students competed in track and field and novelty events to secure house points and to represent their campus in the 2024 SACCSS Athletics Championships in Term 3.
Those off the track showed extraordinary house spirit, lining the fence in their house-coloured accessories and cheering on their schoolmates.
We were incredibly impressed with the behaviour of our Cobblebank students, who followed staff directions, got involved in events, and encouraged others throughout the day.
Congratulations to all who participated in this year’s events and thank you to all staff who attended and supported our students and organisers. The winners of the 2024 Cobblebank Athletics Carnival Cup, House Spirit Shield and House MVP’s will be announced during the next campus assembly.

The College has been advised that the pedestrian crossing at the front of the Melton Campus at Gate 8 will be supervised by Melton Council crossing staff before and after school from tomorrow, Wednesday 8 May.
A reminder to families to please ensure you do not park in the bus parking areas on Bulmans Road outside the College. These are required for buses before and after school and throughout the day for excursion pick-ups and drop-offs.
Families with valid Centrelink concession cards must complete a CSEF application form by 21 June 2024.
If you applied for and received CSEF last year at the College, your application will be rolled over, and there is no need to reapply.
To submit your application, please complete the form linked below and email it, along with a copy of your current concession card, to azammit@sfcc.vic.edu.au
Five students from our sister school, Convitto Nazionale Paolo Diacono in northern Italy, will visit the College from 18 July to 13 August and families are needed to host them during their stay.
The students (four girls and one boy) range in age from 15 to 17 and speak English. The students are here to experience school and life in Australia.
Families can host one or more students during their four weeks here and transport them to and from school as they would their children.
The Italian students will be in classes at the College and some excursions will be organised for them.
If you would like to welcome someone from another country into your home for a few weeks, learn about their life and culture and build new friendships and connections, or you have any questions, please contact me at piannazzo@sfcc.vic.edu.au

The annual SACCSS Cross Country Competition, held at Brimbank Park last week, proved a resounding success. It showcased the athletic prowess and sportsmanship of students from various schools across the region.
Students representing SFCC showed exceptional talent and determination as they navigated through challenging courses, displaying impressive speed and endurance.
Ryder (Year 8) and Caleb (Year 9) were our top performers on the day, finishing first in their respective races, while other participants finished in the top three.
Our College finished the day as Division 2 champions in the Intermediate Boys competition based on the cumulative performance of our competitors. As a result, SFCC Melton has secured a promotion and will compete in Division 1 next year. Well done to all participants.

The Melton Campus Faith and Mission Action Team had a fabulous day of hair colouring and face painting at last week’s Athletics Carnival, raising $200 for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
To add to this total, the team will hold a BBQ during big break outside Sheehan Stadium this Thursday 9 May. The cost will be $2 for a sausage and $2 for a soft drink, cash only.
Our Melton Campus Year 10 Pre-Psychology students visited the Melbourne Zoo last week to further explore ethics and qualitative and quantitative analysis.
They participated in two workshops evaluating the positive welfare of zoo animals and developed a hypothesis predicting whether captive orangutans would be more or less active than those in the wild.
They spent time observing and recording behaviours such as grooming, conflict or competition, foraging or locomotion. It was a fabulous day, and we thank the students for engaging in the activities and representing the College so well.
Here’s what our students had to say:
"Going to the Melbourne Zoo opened my eyes to the ethical principles needed to keep
the animals happy and healthy. We saw a range of animals, from orangutans to elephants, and the keepers showed us how ethics were followed in caring for each of them. This was a really good opportunity for me to see how ethical guidelines and principles come into play in real scenarios." Abbey
"This was such a great learning experience. We had the opportunity to observe and learn about animals' behaviour and identify dependent, independent, and extraneous variables. We had many discussions about ethics, and we had the opportunity to work in groups to observe the animals and collect our own qualitative and quantitative data for future classes." Erin

Our Melton Campus Unit 3 Health and Human Development (HHD) students visited Melbourne Museum last week to participate in the Road to Zero Immersion Program.
Here is what students Leona and Belle had to say about the experience.
The Road to Safety program was an insightful and engaging initiative from TAC to enhance our knowledge of the topic.
The day included interactive activities that further developed our understanding of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and sustainable development goals on road safety.
The program's main objective, to reduce fatal accidents on Victorian roads, was highlighted throughout the activities, which included VR experiences and quizzes.
The additional group session with an HHD examiner was extremely helpful for our upcoming SACs and future exams.
It was a privilege to attend such a great program that expanded our knowledge of road safety. The experience took our understanding of the issue to another level and will help us with our studies.
Congratulations to our Senior Girls Volleyball Division 3/1B team who defeated St Monica’s College three sets to one today in the SACCSS grand final.
The team played a fantastic game and the Peer Award went to Year 10 student Tina.
Our Senior Boys' Volleyball Team were runners up to Caroline Chisholm College Catholic College in their grand final match today. The Peer Award went to Year 10 student Juan.
Thank you to our Senior Boys and Girls in Division 1 for their outstanding efforts this season and to the coaches for their hard work training and developing the teams.
