“After the Lord gave me some brothers, no one showed me what I had to do, but the Most High Himself revealed to me that I should live according to the pattern of the Holy Gospel.” St Francis of Assisi
What Francis meant by “Gospel” was Jesus, the living Word of God, made living flesh and living with us today.
“Brothers, I know Holy Writ - I know the poor Christ,” he said. The last thing Francis wanted was to be special or to found a group of people who would be distinguished or superior.
He wanted as many people as possible to be led by the Holy Spirit to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, allowing the Lord to transform their lives.
To be Franciscan, then, is to attempt to be Christian, a disciple. So, Franciscans today try to be Christians, inspired by the traditions of Francis.
Later this week, four Year 11 students will jet off to Portugal to take part in World Youth Day (WYD).
They will experience the embodiment of what St Francis called The Holy Gospel. Among hundreds of thousands of like-minded youth in Lisbon, our pilgrims – Thinh, Deng, Kevin and Anna- will spend an extraordinary time engaging with fellow members of the world Church, culminating with an outdoor mass with a congregation of up to two million people celebrated by Pope Francis!
You can read more about how they are feeling about their upcoming trip here.
In a great accolade for the College, the archdiocese chose Melton Campus teacher Paul Iannazzo to attend key sessions and lectures in Rome and Assisi before attending the WYD events in Lisbon as part of the Emerging Leaders Program. Paul left on the weekend.
Cobblebank Campus teacher Jonathan Antony will also journey to Lisbon via Madrid with his parish group, and new Melton Campus staff member Jessica Meegama is attending WYD with a group formed by the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
We wish them well and pray for them as they embark on this amazing experience.

This week I travelled to Anglesea to join our Year 8 Melton Campus students on camp.
It is always wonderful to interact with students outside of the classroom setting. It is an opportunity to see a different side of them and get to know more about them.
As I watched students cheer each other on at the high ropes course or race each other up the climbing wall, I was impressed by the can do, get in and have a go attitude of our Year 8 students.
Even the cold ocean temperatures did not deter them from plunging in and practising their surfing.
This year Anglesea has special significance for our campers. Students in Year 8 are studying The Road to Winter by Mark Smith as their English novel. The story is set in Anglesea, and many of the landscapes and landmarks around the area will be pointed out to students.
One of the techniques that good readers use is visualising the story as they read the words. This camp will help students understand the world of Finn and his dog Rowdy as they struggle to survive post-pandemic! It is rumoured that the author may even pay a visit to speak with our students.
Tomorrow I will travel to Marysville to visit our Year 7 students on camp. With students entering Year 7 from various primary feeder schools, the camp is an excellent opportunity to get to know the cohort, make new friends and build teamwork and collaborative skills.
Thank you to our Camps and Incursions Coordinator Jason Rowley for his outstanding organisation of the various camps and our teaching and support staff who take time away from family and partners to spend time with our students.

This year's production is split into two acts.
First up is the hard-to-resist, all-time favourite fairy tale, told with fun and flair. Our actors take over the stage playing rhyming narrators, singing villagers, friendly animals, charming royalty, energetic messengers, the haughty stepmother and stepsisters, the irresistible Fairy Godmother, and lovely Cinderella. Of course, once the charming Prince discovers the proper owner of that famous sparkling slipper, everyone lives happily ever after!
This act showcases our talented Vocal ensemble, VET music band, classroom dancers and dance ensembles.
A huge crowd joined Year 11 student Camryn on the green last Thursday to watch her get the biggest haircut of her life as part of the World’s Greatest Shave.
Joined by friends, family, staff and fellow students, Camryn smiled bravely as section by section of her hair was snipped away before clippers tidied up her new look.
We are so proud Camryn’s efforts – you can read her words of thanks below.
“Two hundred days ago I decided to sign up to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation. I wanted to donate my hair to young kids who have been diagnosed with cancer and have lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy.
“I have managed to raise $2712 so far, which will support individuals and families who are affected by this disease.
“I am extremely grateful to all the amazing people who generously donated and supported me during this campaign. We’ve raised enough money to fund three months of laboratory costs for a research project to discover better treatments for blood cancer enough funds to enable families to attend support programs that are specific to their blood cancer.
“This would not have been possible without you, so thank you!
“My fundraising page will be active until 1 August for any last-minute donations. Once again, a very special thank you to everyone for supporting me and for your generosity.”
Year 11 students Thinh, Deng, Kevin and Anna will travel to Lisbon, Portugal, this weekend with students from the Melbourne Catholic Archdiocese attending World Youth Day.
Melbourne pilgrims will represent some 134 parishes, schools, and movements across the archdiocese, including almost 100 students and 60 teachers from 57 Catholic secondary schools.
“We are incredibly proud to have four students and three staff travelling to World Youth Day in Lisbon this year. This will be a life-changing experience for our students and I’m confident they will bring back new enthusiasm and energy in their faith. We look forward to hearing about their experiences.”
This week the students gave us their thoughts on their upcoming trip.
They also appeared in today's edition of the Melton Moorabool Star Weekly Newspaper. Click here to see the story on page 5.
“I’ve always wanted to go on a pilgrimage and especially to another country, so when my teacher told my homeroom about World Youth Day (WYD), I was extremely interested in taking part in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deepen my faith, visit historic churches and receive the gospel daily.”
“I feel very grateful to be selected for WYD and so happy to be part of this experience. It is my first trip overseas and the focus is on worshipping Jesus, which is extremely special and important to me.” Deng – Year 11
“Part of the reason I am attending WYD is to gain some global perspective. I have been a Catholic my entire life and have been attending Mass weekly for as long as I can remember, but there are people whose idea of Catholicism and faith in general will vary from mine and I am looking forward to meeting all sorts of new people to discover more about the world we live in.”
“I feel like it’s a bit of nervous anticipation. I’m nervous as it’s the furthest I’ve ever been from home, with or without family, but I’m also very lucky to have this opportunity, and I hope I can make our local Melton community proud.” Thinh – Year 11
“I wanted to travel to Portugal for WYD to meet many other people from across the world who share a similar interest in deepening our Catholic faith and connecting with God. I also look forward to learning more about Portuguese culture and exploring another country apart from Australia.”
“I feel a mix of emotions. I feel nervous because I am going to a new country with millions of other people. I also feel excited to experience something new, create memories and have the opportunity to take part. I will make the most of it.” Kevin - Year 11
“I wanted to be part of WYD to deepen my faith and better understand the world around me. I believe that God influences my life and has a great impact on the decisions I make. Going on this trip is an incredible opportunity for my peers and me and an amazing way to celebrate our faith with people as passionate as we are. We get the chance to connect with others and potentially make lifelong friends.”
“I am very excited about the upcoming trip to Portugal. I am delighted and grateful to have been chosen and will cherish it forever.” Anna – Year 11
Our Year 9 students came out strong in Round 2 of their Premier League competition with five wins from six games.
Although the AFL squad fell short of the win on Wednesday, the result didn’t reflect their performance on the field.
Riley Webster was awarded Best on Ground for his tenacity around ball contests.

Our Year 7 and 8 Melton and Year 7 Cobblebank students were put through their paces during a soccer clinic led by Avondale Football Club Senior Assistant Coach Andy Vargas last week.
The clinics were part of Italian Week celebrations at the College.
The students picked up new skills and strategies and we thank Andy for his enthusiasm and sharing his knowledge and time.

Students and staff from Lawrence House gathered for mass at St Catherine of Siena church last week to celebrate the feast day of St Lawrence of Brindisi, which is marked on 21 July.
To begin our first mass as a house, Fr Moody showed us a short video about St Lawrence’s life, achievements and the values we can learn from him.
Students showed great respect before and during the mass and should be proud of their behaviour.

In Semester 1, our Domain Leaders of Science, Health and Physical Education, Arts, Mathematics, Technology and Language participated in a Growth Coaching Program to further develop best practices and enhance student outcomes.
It was a program to instigate change by setting goals, examining realities, options, will, and tactics and formulating habits.
The program included setting Domain SMART Goals, such as ‘What does good teaching look like?’, data collection, and undertaking practical coaching tools, such as ‘Snap coaching’.
Stimulating and constructive Domain SMART Goals have been established. For example:
‘To develop explicit lesson plans, through collaborative planning that emphasises specific skills in practical lessons through learning intentions and success criteria.’
‘To improve communication and feedback processes, I will enhance both staff and student engagement by being a part of the feedback process. This ultimately will enhance both personally and academically for staff and students.’
This exciting new Growth Coaching Program is ongoing for Semester 2.

Do you have a home library bursting at the seams, a few books gathering dust or have the kids outgrown the books you have?
The College library is seeking quality books suitable for children and young adults for its Great Book Swap, to be held on Thursday 24 August.
During Literacy Week, we conduct a book swap where students and staff can purchase books for a gold coin.
All money raised is donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to help fund their Book Supply Program, which reaches over 400 remote communities.
All books can be dropped off at the front office or the library.
